An educational collaboration with Maryville, Tenn. school Clayton-Bradley Academy demonstrates that Clayton’s commitment to "Do good" through community outreach extends to the next generation. “Designing with the Pros” is a semester-long class, now in its fourth year, that gives sophomore through senior high school students an opportunity to explore multiple aspects of home design and construction. The class pairs Clayton team members with students for a deep dive into to the ACE (architecture, construction and engineering) fields. The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, The American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) are fighting with National Architectural Accrediting Board over their looming threat to charge architecture schools directly for their accreditation. They’ve been in mediation since last year & bills are coming due. These fees would disproportionately hurt historically underfunded schools like HBCUs, administrators say. Also there’s a secret “operational assessment” of NAAB that NAAB says exonerates them and ACSA says absolutely does not. My latest in Architectural Record. https://lnkd.in/gpQE3H6t

When Chris Fogarty's daughter expressed interest in becoming an architect, it sparked a journey into the intricacies of the US and UK educational systems. As a seasoned architect with over two decades of experience in the US, Chris thought he had a grasp on guiding his daughter's path. However, delving deeper, he realised the significant contrasts between the US and UK educational routes. In the US, the road to becoming an architect diverges into two main paths: the traditional five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program and the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) postgraduate route. Unlike the UK's structured Parts 1, 2, and 3 process, US students usually embark on a broader academic journey before specialising. This flexibility, while advantageous, can come at a significant financial cost. Navigating the complexities of architectural education revealed sobering truths about accessibility and inclusivity within the profession. Despite strides towards flexibility, the high cost of education coupled with a demanding licensure process renders architecture increasingly exclusive. Chris's article underscores the need for reform, echoing discussions within the UK's architectural circles. As debates ensue on both sides of the Atlantic, the quest for a more equitable and accessible architectural education continues. #architecture #diversity #education #accessibility #USandUK Fogarty Finger Architects Registration Board RIBA RIBA-USA https://lnkd.in/emv43uWg

Of the more than 1,000 educational projects completed by DMR Architects, more than 80% can be categorized as reinvestment relationships that have spanned decades, touched most of the districts’ buildings and guided the community through major moments. DMR has supported at least 30 districts through 25 projects each, a window into the role that an architect plays in the process of providing modern, safe and stimulating infrastructure for learning. In addition to choosing a capable designer, choosing the right architectural partner for these projects means choosing a firm that can identify unique funding sources, comprehend pragmatic functions of the building, consider how construction projects will disrupt the existing ecosystem and examine every opportunity for a chance to improve functionality. #NJarchitects

#MichaelJCrosbie talks with executive director of @AssociationofCollegiateSchoolsofArchitecture, #MichaelMonti, about the future of #ArchitecturalEducation: "My concern is not that architecture schools don’t have well-considered curricula. What’s broken are the terms by which the purposes and value of higher education are measured, particularly in the world of practice." 1. Get the right funding matched to the right incentives/ targets/ benchmarks and suddenly the environmentally responsible option makes sense. 2. Set out challenging but achievable targets and the supply chain catches up really fast - ultimately you either want a seat at the table or you don’t. 3. Everyone benefits: better buildings, better to inhabit, upskilled supply chain delivering better quality product. Question: Is it really that hard to do?! #passivhaus #construction

#MichaelJCrosbie talks to #MichaelMonti, executive director of #AssociationofCollegiateSchoolsofArchitecture, about architecture education: "People are vulnerable, and that’s one of the main reasons for professions. Professionals are licensed and given a specific scope of work, and they can’t just give clients what they want. Professionals have 'dangerous knowledge,' to quote Daniel Friedman. Buildings can harm people if they fall down. As an architect, you need a professional education based on ethical foundations and values to contribute to a more civilized life." https://lnkd.in/egrYuj6j

DMR’s Kurt Vierheilig, AIA,LEED was among the architects interviewed by School Leader magazine about the connection between school design and student achievement. “Kurt Vierheilig, a partner and the director of design at DMR Architects, keeps the overarching goal of designing buildings where students and teachers can succeed top of mind at all times. How school design interfaces with student achievement is ‘so important that maybe people don’t talk about it enough. Everyone is concerned with how much a building costs … just being able to deliver a school to ease capacity issues and get students into proper classrooms has become a huge focus. Getting as much right as possible during the design process is key when it comes to improving learning and academic achievement. Good architects and good designers who understand the K-12 environment know how little things can make a big difference.’” #NJarchitects
