When educational architects and designers begin the process of modernization and construction, it can include more than the creation of blueprints and meeting district budgets. Engaging with each school's community can help to craft unique experiences whether it's in the middle of a busy city or in a rural setting. Kara Arundel illustrates some fine examples in this article. #SchoolDesign #EducationMatters #EmpoweringLearners

Jemma Bridgeman's research at WISERD in social value, emphasizes the importance of consulting educational experts and pupils when developing new schools. 👂 By actively listening to and acting on their views, we can create environments that better meet the needs of students and staff. 📈 Additionally she advocates for research into how end users interact with new school buildings, particularly in larger schools designed for economies of scale. 🗺️ This focus on user experience can help identify and address issues that may lead to disruptive behavior, ultimately improving educational outcomes and creating safer, more supportive school environments. 🔊 The examples such as balconies and noisy classrooms impacting behaviour can be areas of careful reflection when designing. It reminded me of the Julian Treasure TED about asking if architects had ears where he specifically mentions a loud school balcony. 💭 User feedback isn't hard, it just needs thought and to be a part of the continual circular practice of understanding design intent, benefits and evaluation. 👉 An example of using feedback to inform school design I've come across is Hampshire County Council's Michael Chater using the Building Use Studies Methodology in schools. #Education #Lessonslearnt #Student-Centred Design 🎓 If you'd like to know more Jemma's article for 2024 is part of @ARCOM (The Association of Researchers in Construction Management) https://lnkd.in/e8u4c_wF 😊 This free image is from Sondor Stories with thanks

An educational collaboration with Maryville, Tenn. school Clayton-Bradley Academy demonstrates that Clayton’s commitment to "Do good" through community outreach extends to the next generation. “Designing with the Pros” is a semester-long class, now in its fourth year, that gives sophomore through senior high school students an opportunity to explore multiple aspects of home design and construction. The class pairs Clayton team members with students for a deep dive into to the ACE (architecture, construction and engineering) fields. Architect's Notes. Marina Korzhenko Feelings of freedom and democracy in relationships through school architecture. Workshops with children. How did it go? "In my opinion, one of the problems with educational institutions is the lack of interaction between the school administration and the children who study there. Our task is to create a space for feeling freedom and democracy in relationships. To achieve this, we conducted a brainstorming session with the primary participants being the children themselves. It was a treasure trove of ideas on how everything should be organized. We grouped the children by key areas within the school and asked them what they would like to see there. Important spaces for the students, of course, turned out to be communal areas where they can come together, communicate, and express themselves: non-traditional classrooms for learning, media zones, educational spaces that engage and offer opportunities to try out different aspects of future adult life. These are safe places in case of emergencies, where one can spend useful time and relax. Learning through play and broadening horizons thanks to the school's planning decisions. It was pleasantly surprising for me how much the children thought about the ecological component, waste recycling, and zero energy consumption. Children want to be involved in what matters. By gathering all wishes and advice from these 'experts,' we created a school where everyone can feel comfortable and safe."

"The space around a child – a person – is important. The spaces we are in influence how we are as people just like nutrition influences health and well-being. So why aren’t our communities designed differently? And from a school perspective – how do we teach that?" – Dan Pitera, FAIA, dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture and Community Development UDM is committed to preparing students to address #urbanrevitalization, #environmentaljustice, and #sustainability through its design studios, Master of Community Development, Detroit Collaborative Design Center, and international studies program. We interviewed Pitera about the school's approach to preparing students for the practical applications of sustainable design through real-world experience. “There are estimated to be 35 Passivhaus schools currently underway or in the pipeline in Scotland. The international Passivhaus building standard offers exceptional energy efficiency, cutting a building’s heating energy use by up to 80%, compared to current building regulations, as well as delivering exemplary levels of interior comfort, wellbeing, and durability. Scottish Futures Trust funding This revolution in Scottish schools has come about thanks to an innovative funding mechanism from the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT). Projects receiving funding need to meet an ambitious energy target and funding may be reduced based on any performance gap post-completion. The Passivhaus standard effectively eliminates the performance gap, de-risking the securing of funding. It has been impressive how swiftly the industry, supply chain and clients have adjusted to delivering to the Passivhaus standard in the education sector. And perhaps these school projects can offer useful lessons to the wider Scottish construction industry.”

As higher education enrollment rates climb, there is an urgent need for students to have quality housing on college campuses. HKS education designers have created student housing environments on campuses small and large. But beyond just delivering housing units, our teams have conducted extensive research to understand what students really want and need for their housing. HKS has developed a research coalition to help align with university partners on how to put student experience at the center of the design process. Out of twelve student needs, three of the most foundational needs identified were privacy, socialization and comfort. 🔽 Read on to understand how we have integrated the student experience into our design approach and the impact it has made. https://hks.onl/4eeQYbL Renae Mantooth/Jeff A.
