The deadline to register for the 2025 Design for Freedom Competition–Ethical and Equitable Materiality to End Forced Labor–is tomorrow, April 9th: https://lnkd.in/e_KwJ7aj In collaboration with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture we invite architecture students to participate in a competition to explore how architectural materials research and design can eliminate forced labor in the building materials supply chain – to explore and propose how architects can work to eradicate forced and child labor from the built environment. Submissions will be reviewed by an esteemed panel of jurors—leaders in architecture and design, including: Alan Ricks (Founding Principal and Chief Design Officer, MASS Design Group); Antonio Torres Skillicorn (PhD Candidate in Civil Engineering at Stanford University); Christopher Sharples, AIA (Founding Principal, SHoP Architects); Farida Abu-Bakare(Associate Principal and Director of Global Practice at WXY); Ina Dajci (Ph.D. Researcher, Yale CEA); Julia Gamolina (Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Madame Architect & Associate Principal, Ennead Architects) Kai-Uwe Bergmann, FAIA (Partner, BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group); Michael J. Last month, ACSA and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) held their joint ACSA/AIA Intersections Research Conference in Austin, TX, January 9-11, 2025. Hosted by the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, the conference explored housing as a process, a product, and a place. The ACSA/AIA Intersections Research Conference coincided with the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) FORUM in Austin, creating an opportunity for each organization’s respective audience of educators, practitioners, and students to come together for a weekend of scholarly exchange. The conference brought together over 139 attendees from around the world who joined together to speculate on, advocate for, operate within, and struggle with new housing paradigms. This Black History Month, join us in celebrating the illustrious architecture programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). ⁠ Of the 139 NAAB-accredited schools of architecture, seven are HBCUs. They are:⁠ —FAMU Architecture + Engineering Technology ⁠ —Hampton University ⁠ —Howard University ⁠ —Morgan State University - School of Architecture + Planning ⁠ —Prairie View A&M University ⁠ —Tuskegee University ⁠ —University of the District of Columbia ⁠ HBCUs are an essential part of making the architecture field diverse and equitable. These schools make up 5 percent of the NAAB-accredited schools but enroll 32 percent of the total Black student population in accredited and preprofessional programs. I had a great time at the Jandris Block plant tour with Brien Baker & Stephen Schreiber's University of Massachusetts Amherst architectural students in preparation for their Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture #ConcreteMasonry Design Competition submissions. For me, the highlight was having students grab a piece of a fresh #block right off the production line to get a FEEL for #CMU before they're cured! Very crumbly!! I can't wait to see what they come up with for this year's competition. Best of luck students!
