***Update*** Announcing the first cohort of cities! We recently shared the growing list of supporting partners. Now, we announce the trailblazing cities joining us for the opportunity baselining phase. 🤝 We are super excited to work with the City and County of San Francisco, Boulder County, City of Flagstaff, Stockholms stad, Helsingin kaupunki – Helsingfors stad – City of Helsinki, Københavns Kommune (Copenhagen), Stadt Zürich, Glasgow City Council, Bristol City Council, City of Sydney and several others. We'll announce a second cohort of cities in the coming weeks. 🏙️ In the next months, we will be working with the cities to collect data across three grouped themes: Governance and GHG accounting; Policy and regulation; Urban systems and infrastructure. This data will help us groundtruth our assumptions and recommendations for unlocking: ✔️ Cities as Agents: Municipal governments are a powerful public governance layer after national governments and can pursue systemic policymaking close to everyday citizens. ✔️ Cities as Areas: The urban environment holds massive potential for CDR. A first-of-a-kind global assessment published end-2024 in Nature estimates it upwards of 1 Gt/CO2 p/a. 💡Specifically, this data will support a range of assets we will be publishing in the lead up to our final report in September: 👉 City case studies 👉 Urban CDR pathway fact sheets 👉 Cross-policy fact sheets 👉 City CDR strategy roadmaps 👉 City net zero action plan template 📢 How can you support this effort? ✅ Reach out if you know other cities—every city counts. ✅ Like and share the news to help expand our reach. ✅ Follow our LinkedIn page for updates.

Cutting carbon emissions is key to reducing the risks of climate change. But emissions likely won't fall fast enough to limit warming to 2C, let alone 1.5C. That's where carbon dioxide removal comes in. But funding to the nascent sector is mismatched. Currently, money flowing into direct air capture surpasses investment into all other types of carbon removal. That's not including the US Energy Department's commitment to spend billions on DAC hubs. Buyers have also concentrated most of their carbon removal purchases in one pathway: bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, or BECCS. Almost 60% of all purchases tracked by CDR.fyi between 2019 and 2024 are for BECCS, and the proportion has only risen this year. Despite their dominance, BECCS and DAC have only delivered a tiny proportion of promised removal to date. More than 80% of all removals delivered between 2019 and 2024 as tracked by CDR.fyi came from biochar. CDR experts I spoke to cautioned a diversified, portfolio approach is important when it comes to scaling this small but critical sector. Each carbon removal pathway has its pros and cons, and there's no silver bullet solution. But so far, the bets are not spread evenly. Scientists say the entire carbon removal industry has to scale dramatically if we want any chance of keeping the climate stable. They also warn that these technologies should only be used for a narrow set of applications: cleaning up legacy emissions and addressing the most intractable ones. Here's the full story on the state of the carbon dioxide removal industry (in front of paywall for 7 days): https://lnkd.in/gQ4ARwza
