Locking carbon where it belongs

About us

Introducing Alt Carbon - a climate action company on a mission to capture vast amounts of CO2 from our atmosphere. Our engineered removal technology securely locks away carbon immediately and permanently. With rigorous research, we ensure our methods are safe and accurately measure the carbon we remove, along with co-benefits to soil health. Partnering with local agricultural communities, we support and empower them through our work. By providing precise carbon credits, we assist companies in meeting net zero goals and individuals in making a difference. Our ambitious goal is to remove 5M MT of CO2 by 2030, with the ultimate aim of reaching a billion tons - for good.

    I write! | BITS Pilani | EY | 5M+ content views | Project Consultant @ Origin Health | Winner Case Competition @ IIM-B

This Bitsian startup makes history as the first Indian company to secure a $500K from Frontier! Alt Carbon's story starts from the Covid-19 lockdown when two brothers, Shrey Agarwal and Sparsh Agarwal, went back to their family's tea estate in Darjeeling. They are 4th-generation tea planters, but their business was going downhill, and the family wanted to sell it off. But “Fate intervened,” recalls Sparsh, and instead of selling their estate, they used Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) to revive their 150-year-old tea plantation. And that changed everything! ERW uses crushed basalt, a volcanic rock, which accelerates the natural carbon-removal process and balances soil pH as well, hence better yields! Their results caught the eye of Frontier, an organization backed by Stripe, Shopify, and Google. With the new capital, Alt Carbon plans to expand to 500,000 hectares of land in India’s tea belt by 2030. And targeting 5 million tons of CO₂ removal annually—enough to offset the annual emissions of several medium-sized cities. Carbon removal is the future. Only best great times ahead for Alt Carbon and the team❤

🌍 Parvat Say: The 9th edition of our newsletter features Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) updates, a potential new buyer entering the CDR universe, growth in South Asian CDR and our latest partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation! A short glimpse of what to expect in the newsletter: • The Science Based Targets initiative is shifting gears on corporate net-zero standards, placing stronger emphasis on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) as an essential component of climate strategy. Ted Christie-Miller has a short Linkedin post on what’s missing and still needs to be done. Robert Höglund explains the way forward. • Major pension funds holding $1.5tn have told asset managers to proactively tackle climate risk or risk being dropped. • 💚 We hosted Adam Wolf, Founder and CEO at Eion Carbon, in Darjeeling. Adam is really the godfather of the ERW industry. We exchanged notes, learnt best practices, and fed Adam a whole lot of the World’s Greatest Tea™, courtesy of the humble hills of Darjeeling. • 🏆 We also signed a partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation, marking a major step toward making India a hub for Carbon Dioxide Removal. (More on this in the newsletter) • ⛰️ Oh, and India’s leading Carbon Removal Summit is back! Want to know more? Check out the newsletter 😉 <Link in the comments> #ClimateAction #NetZero #ERW #CDR #altfutures #CarbonRemoval #ClimateChange

🚨 A Defining Moment for Alt Carbon & Indian CDR 🚨 We are extremely excited to announce that we’ve signed an agreement with Mitsubishi Corporation to make #India a hub for #Carbon #Dioxide #Removal (CDR). In less than 14 months, we have Japan’s leading company backing our scientific rigour and operational excellence. We met the Mitsubishi Corporation team last year for the first time at the Carbon Unbound conference. Since then, we’ve been engaging with the team on the potential of scaling carbon removal through #Enhanced #Rock #Weathering (ERW) — a process we’re pioneering in the Global South. We met again at the Futures Summit, in Darjeeling and in Tokyo showcasing the potential of ERW, and how we can lead the way in helping corporates & govts. achieve their ambitious Net Zero targets. Our goal at Alt Carbon has always been to build a world class #science and #technology company in India, that can deliver the highest quality carbon removal credits to the world, and build enough capacity to remove carbon at megaton scale by 2030, gigaton scale by 2040. This is about reshaping climate action—and with Mitsubishi Corporation by our side, we’re accelerating that future. This partnership is surreal. But it’s only the beginning. The road ahead is long, and we are just getting started :)) Arigatō Gozaimas, Tadashi Sawamura, Yusuke Tsuji, Kohki Kawaguchi, Lisa Yamazumi, OSAMU IWAMOTO, Ran Wu, and the entire Mitsubishi team for believing in us and our commitment to remove carbon at scale, while maintaining the highest forms of rigour and velocity. Incase you are looking to know more about our Darjeeling Revival Project and our first-of-a-kind partnership, we’d love to have you join us for our next dinner in Tokyo and SF in April 🍸 P.S. Here’s a picture from our workshop at the Economist Impact Sustainability Week, in London where we made it official ✌🏼 - We are quite grateful to have speakers like Antti Vihavainen, Stacy Kauk, P.Eng., Gabrielle Walker, Emily Jackson-Kessler, Robert Höglund, Anu Khan participate and help in sharing how Global South is an ideal place to scale up ERW.

Isometric has certified an update to its Enhanced Weathering (EW) Protocol. Like all Isometric protocols, the updated version has gone through a public consultation and received extensive feedback from carbon removal suppliers, EW partners and the Isometric Science Network, which has more than 300+ academic researchers. The changes reflect learnings from verifying the world’s first Enhanced Weathering credits and provide more flexibility for suppliers by accounting for the unique conditions of every project. The number and type of soil samples required is now tailored to a project’s site. This creates flexibility for suppliers, while maintaining scientific rigor, and means leading EW suppliers can be confident in designing their operations to meet Isometric’s requirements. Suppliers using the protocol can deliver the highest quality credits on the market, supported by real, transparent data. InPlanet in Brazil, Alt Carbon and Mati Carbon in India, and ZeroEx in Germany are all working with Isometric to ensure rigorous monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) on their existing and future sites. The protocol is also aligned with best practice recommendations from Cascade Climate. EW buyers support the updated protocol and are taking credits delivered under it. This includes verified credits from InPlanet being issued to Adyen, having been secured by ClimeFi. Learn more at the first link in the comments.
