  • Latin America's soil health: a call to action 🌎 A new study shows that only 34% of soils in the region are in good health. One innovative approach to improving soil health is enhanced rock weathering. This climate technology based on the natural process of rock weathering helps increase soil mineral content, improves nutrient availability, and can sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing to climate change mitigation and soil health simultaneously. Additionally, enhanced rock weathering can foster microbial activity, leading to healthier soils that support diverse plant life and enhance crop yields. Congratulations to the researchers from the Department of Soil Science of Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" and CCARBON/USP - Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture, USP - Universidade de São Paulo. Culture Is the Shadow of People: Notes from Our Ops Offsite I’m currently at our team’s operational offsite, the energy is electric, the conversations are real, and the churrasco is sizzling. It’s moments like these that remind me of something Peter Drucker understood better than most: culture eats strategy for breakfast. What makes culture? It’s not perks, logos, or slide decks. It’s people. The right people. And not just “qualified” people. I mean the self-guided missiles, those rare individuals who navigate ambiguity with clarity, take initiative without asking, and lead from every seat at the table. These are the people who shape culture, not by talking about it, but by living it. Every day. Especially when no one is watching. At InPlanet, we’ve chosen a decentralized structure. Not because it’s trendy, but because it reflects how we believe change happens: from the ground up, powered by trust and ownership. That only works if we hire for autonomy. Ben Horowitz said it best: “Hire for strengths, not lack of weaknesses.” That’s our north star. I don’t need perfection. I need people who are brilliant at what they do, who care deeply, and who move fast with judgment. As Nikolay Storonsky calls them, “self-guided missiles.” I want people who can figure it out. People who don’t wait to be told what to do. People who see a gap, step in, and lead. Because in a decentralized organization, no one is coming to micromanage you. Your mission, your initiative, your judgment that’s what drives us forward. That’s how we’ve grown. That’s how we’ll win. And as we grow, I find myself thinking less about roles and more about alignment and energy. Are you here to build something meaningful? Do you thrive when trusted with freedom? Do you act like an owner? If yes, there’s a place for you here. A place where culture isn’t taught, it’s absorbed. In every async doc, every community dinner, every tough decision made with integrity. The true InPlanet moat is not just our science or market or speed. It’s the team. It’s the fact that our people are missionaries, not mercenaries. They care. They move. They own. And at this offsite, I’m watching that culture unfold in real time. One churrasco, one decision, one amazing human at a time.

Exploring the rich mosaic of soil heterogeneity, and how to navigate its complexities 🌎 InPlanet’s approach to Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) involves multiple analyses - gas, liquid, vegetation and solid in soil - to track Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) effectively. A key challenge is developing standard operating procedures for soil sampling that balance operational feasibility, cost, and data quality. In a recent article authored by Dr. Matthew C., Head of Carbon, Dr. Christina Larkin, Ph.D., Head of Science and Research, Dr. Junyao Kang, PhD, Data Analysis and Modeling Lead, our Science Team shares more about the complexity of soil-based Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) strategies. Many thanks to Isometric reviewers Dr. Ella Holme, Ph.D., Head of Mineralization, and Dr. Kevin Sutherland, Carbon Removal Scientist. Soil chemistry may vary at the meter scale, even for the same soil type in the same field. To capture the variability across the field, we use: 🌱subsampling methods 🌱pooling 🌱rarefaction 🌱paired analyses At InPlanet, we continue to integrate these essential ERW research questions into current and future deployments to refine our MRV approaches. A startup in our portfolio just joined the ranks of Waymo, NVIDIA, and Duolingo. It’s not building self-driving cars, microchips, or language apps. It’s spreading rock powder. InPlanet was just named one of the “Most Innovative Companies in Latin America for 2025” by Fast Company. They share the list with companies building AI, robotics, and the future of digital life. InPlanet? They’re focused on the future of real life. The founders’ (Felix Harteneck and Niklas Kluger) mission is simple and visionary: Use enhanced rock weathering (ERW) to trap carbon in tropical soils, turning farmland into climate tech. The early results show a simple finding: it’s working. The company has grown its operations by over 100X in a single year, and is nearing completion of the deployment of 200,000 tons of rock powder with a maximum carbon removal potential of over 50,000 tons. Most importantly, it’s building the science and trust infrastructure to make ERW a gigaton-scale carbon drawdown solution. This is what next-generation climate action looks like. It’s not loud and flashy. It’s rocks and soil and sensors and spreadsheets, combined in field trials and dynamic partnerships. It’s changing the climate math in real time. We couldn’t be prouder of the team at InPlanet. When we invested, we believed enhanced rock weathering in tropical regions had huge potential. They’re proving us right—and they’re just getting started. If you want to work on something with planetary-scale impact, this is your sign to start. The real-life future belongs to the builders of carbon removal. Let’s keep going. #CarbonDrawdown #ClimateTech #EnhancedWeathering #FCMostInnovative #netzero https://lnkd.in/dQZ2hCVC

Will Carbon Dioxide Removal become one of the world's biggest commodities? 🌎 Achieving the CDR needed for a safer climate future is challenging but attainable. If CDR successfully scales to 10 Gt/year, it would outsize coal (8-9 Gt/y), oil (4.2 Gt/y), and iron ore (3 Gt/y), positioning it as a major global commodity. To achieve the removal of several gigatons of CO₂ from the atmosphere annually by 2050, we must create an industry on par with the largest in the world. Now is the time to advance technologies like Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW); by investing strategically today, we can reduce the effort needed for each additional ton of CO₂, making gigaton-scale removal a tangible reality. 🌱 #CDR #CarbonRemoval #Sustainability #ClimateAction Original blog reference credit: RMI “What We Really Mean by ‘The Massive Scale’ Required for CDR in Climate Goals”, by Annina Sartor, Gloria See, Isabel Wood, Eli Weaver, Rudy Kahsar
