How can AI be used as a productive metaphor and intellectual tool for the humanities? A new volume of essays explores a novel approach to the intersection of AI and the #humanities, proposing that instead of merely writing about AI, scholars should think with AI. Our Affiliate Audrey Borowski has contributed an essay on the parallels between #algorithmic systems in addressing the unpredictability of the world and the function of myth. "The best way to predict the future is to make it." This could have been the motto for the incredible launch of the AI Security Institute Societal Resilience cohort of research grants. We've spent the last two days at the gorgeous Digital Catapult offices learning about the cutting edge of socio-technical AI safety and security research. Key ideas: ➡️ UK AI Minister Feryal Clark reminded everyone that innovation and growth depends on getting AI safety and security right: we need to "Bake safety into AI from the start". Really grateful she could join us and made time to speak with us. ➡️James Dracott UKRI EPSRC Deputy Head for AI & Data said that we are "really contributing to one of the defining challenges of our time" and connected to the UK's incredible history in AI starting with Alan Turing: "The choices we make today will shape what the UK looks like in 50 and 100 years." You know, no pressure or anything! ➡️Andrew Strait gave his maiden speech as Head of Societal Resilience at AISI with the vivid metaphor of frontier AI companies the "rocket engines of the future without working on the steering or the brakes." ➡️ EY partner Chris Dobson welcomed us into their stunning Thames-view offices (see my obligatory photo of flowers glowing in the late afternoon sun). ➡️ Louise Marshall head of academic partnerships at AISI summed up how and why we are connecting this research to the work inside AISI and across with one another. Such great conversations! My fellow AISI Societal Resilience grantees are thoughtful and interesting and some friends old and new including Jack Stilgoe Shoaib Ehsan and Caitlin Bentley from Responsible Ai UK, Dr. Maya Indira Ganesh from Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (who was also celebrating the launch of her new book Auto Correct) Carl Macrae Nick Hawes Sam Stockwell Adam Mahdi. At the reception I really enjoyed speaking to Lisa Coles and Esra Kasapoglu and coming up with ideas to build the UK AI ecosystem into the 🚀 we are. Thanks to Shahar Avin for all the work bringing us together. My project is Work for AI Safety working with trade unions in the UK, US and EU to develop training materials for identifying emerging AI risks. You can read about it and all the projects of this new programme in the link below.

Loved cheering on folks at the Responsible Ai UK AI and Robotics Research Awards night with the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) Hub !! ⭐ Really enjoyed the keynotes which provided more then a few brain sparks... I have tried my best to capture them below :) On what Art can do for AI - flipping the script! (by Steve Benford): - Art has traditionally excelled at embracing ambiguity, contradiction, and the ineffable aspects of human experience that AI systems struggle to quantify. Perhaps art serves as an essential mirror, reflecting back to AI development what it means to create with intention beyond optimisation. - Art's relationship with uncertainty is particularly relevant. While AI systems typically aim to reduce uncertainty, artists often deliberately preserves and explores it. I think this tension suggests that artistic sensibilities might help AI systems develop a more nuanced understanding of human interpretation and meaning-making that extends beyond statistical patterns. - Reflecting on my artistic process — I embrace happy accidents, follow intuitive leaps, and work within constraints— perhaps this offers valuable lessons for AI development that purely technical approaches might miss. Perhaps the future of truly intelligent systems lies not just in their ability to analyse but in their capacity to synthesise in ways that surprise even their creators. - Beyond passive contribution, artists actively shape how data is collected, organised, and interpreted. Their curatorial decisions—what to emphasise, what to juxtapose, what to exclude—represent a form of embodied knowledge that influences AI development. Unlike randomly collected data, artistically curated datasets can highlight specific human values, aesthetic traditions, or cultural narratives. On Capacity Loss and Identity (Subramanian Ramamoorthy's question) - Our answer to the question of 'which capacity's loss would make us particularly sad as we age' reveals what we consider essential to our identity and dignity and invites us to articulate what is core to our humanity, revealing values that might otherwise remain implicit in our daily lives. - For me, I think the loss of memory would be most devastating—not just factual recall but the autobiographical narrative that gives life coherence and meaning. Without memory, are we still the same person? The continuity of self depends partly on remembering who we were. - As a musician I also think the loss of creative expression might be most painful—the ability to externalise my inner world and communicate it to others. The gradual narrowing of expressive capacity would feel like a shrinking of the self. - Finally the loss of recognition—the ability to know and be known by those I love. This mutual recognition forms the foundation of our deepest relationships and connects to our fundamental need to be witnessed by others. 😊 Thank you for the thoughts and congrats to the winners :)
