📢 LDES Cap & Floor Window 1 is open for applications! Off the back of a Technical Decision Document published in mid-March, Ofgem have moved to formally open the first application window for the LDES cap & floor mechanism. https://lnkd.in/eiHKYXMA Overall, this is a positive and significant milestone in the introduction of a new market and revenue support mechanism for electricity storage in the UK. It is the culmination of a lot of analysis, industry consultation and detailed policy development. In the letter, Ofgem have confirmed some key dates: 👉 Application Window 1 opens today, 8th April, for Stream 1 (100MW, 8hrs, TRL 9) and Stream 2 (50MW, 8 hrs, TRL 8) LDES technology projects 👉 Applicants must notify Ofgem of intent to apply by 22nd April 👉 The deadline for applications to be submitted is 9th June 2025 (noting that further information may be required in the run-up to this date) 👉 The details of the proposed cost benefit analysis framework will be developed by Ofgem (with the support from the National Energy System Operator), consulted on in Q2 and finalised for publication (with accompanying guidance/templates) in Q3 2025 👉 Ofgem will also be consulting on the Cap and Floor financial model, (including approaches to introduce competition into the calculation of the cap), in June 2025 👉 Applicants that pass eligibility assessment will be asked for detailed cost information in Q3/Q4, for assessment in Q4. The ‘by 2030’ and ‘by 2033’ twin-track approach may be applied to this detailed CBA assessment step 👉 Alongside the eligibility assessment and CBA, Ofgem is also intending to advise on the timing for opening Window 2 of the scheme in Q1 2026. This will assess the LDES capacity that has passed Window 1 eligibility and CBA, advice from NESO and overall alignment with the SSEP. Ofgem have also published a ‘blow by blow’ guidance document about the application, eligibility and CBA assessment stages, as well as a deeper overview of the eligibility framework itself. 📄https://lnkd.in/e5fEdGZi 📄https://lnkd.in/eKp5fpsY So lots to unpack! As ever, we will be digesting these documents, their impacts and engaging further with our Electricity Storage Network members. We will specifically be looking for further clarity around the nature of battery storage projects seeking to apply, and how the eligibility assessment criteria for this cap and floor scheme aligns with both the CP30 technology cap for battery storage and the definition of designated projects for LDES within NESO’s grid connections reform methodology. Please do get in touch with myself, Olly or Alex if you have any takeaways or views on these documents! I'm contactable on 📩 rarrell@regen.co.uk

Pleased to have contributed to this teaching resource by providing the context on why we need renewables, the challenges and trade-offs involved, and the importance of ensuring a just transition. This resource is a great example of engaging the wider community in the renewable energy development process. By encouraging students to weigh up the arguments for and against wind farm development and consider different stakeholder perspectives, it challenges young people to critically explore the need for renewable energy and the complexities of its development. It’s been a busy few weeks getting ready for the consultation on Scout Moor II, but one thing I’ve really enjoyed during this period is helping pull together an Education Resource for GCSE geography students – both locally and across the wider region. 📘 https://lnkd.in/e76abVzJ As a geography graduate, I remember working on similar case studies – weighing up the need for development against environmental impacts and the views of local stakeholders. We've aimed to create a balanced resource that not only informs young people, but also invites their voices into the conversation around our proposed wind farm. A huge thank you to Martin Foulkes and The Comino Foundation, and to the brilliant teams at Regen, Turley and Lexington for helping us shape something we hope will inspire.
