Thank you so much for your valuable contribution Louise Dalton! It was a blast. We're also looking forward to next year already! In fact, there's a waiting list for anyone who's really keen to hear when tickets go live and grab that early bird discount... https://lnkd.in/dB5aJGfi
Photographic evidence of the great fun Semih Oztreves, Claire Dykta, Rosalind Smith-Maxwell and I had at the Electricity Storage Network Annual Conference a couple of weeks ago, whilst discussing some very serious topics, such as: 🌱 Clean Power 2030 🔌 Connections reform 📉 Revenue challenges 📝 Planning backlogs 👷♀️ People and supply chain constraints 💷 The need for billions of equity investment and debt finance in order to achieve a further 17 - 22 GW of battery storage by 2030 As I said on the day, I love how this sector always rises to the challenge and comes up with innovative solutions 🤓 - so I look forward to seeing what we all come up with to deal with the rather unique challenges that the combination of the above presents 💪 Thanks to Mike Ryan for his (as ever!) thought-provoking questions and excellent chairing and Olly Frankland, Rachel Hayes and the wider Regen for a fabulous conference! Looking forward to next year already. #ESN2024 #BESS #energystorage #LDES

💥 Yesterday’s Electricity Storage Network Annual Conference was packed full of both excellent people and content 💥 💚 We were particularly impressed that c.40% of the speakers were women and there was a good gender balance in the audience too. 💚 👏👏👏 Olly Frankland, Rachel Hayes and Hannah Stanley and the rest of Regen team for a fantastic event.
🔋 📢 An early Christmas cracker! Yesterday's Electricity Storage Network annual conference was brilliant! Thanks to the 250+ attendees for taking the time away from feverishly writing your consultation responses to attend our event. Highlights for me were: 👉 The Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP, attending our industry roundtable and providing a keynote speech. He was genuinely passionate, engaged and well-briefed. 🎯 Our fantastic speakers and panellists gave everyone attending a really clear, honest and entertaining view of the opportunities and challenges we are facing as a sector. From the Balancing Mechanism to CP30, we covered a huge range of topics in a short space of time. 👨👩👦👦 The quality of the attendees provided an excellent atmosphere and high-class networking. It was a real pleasure to see so many friendly faces in one place. Same time next year? See many of you at a working group soon. Get in touch if you are interested in getting more involved in Electricity Storage Network ofrankland@regen.co.uk Thanks to the amazing Regen team for pulling it all together.

🔋 Battery storage is essential to accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels and achieving carbon neutrality. With 1/3rd of britain’s gas-fired energy generation retiring before 2030 and we increase reliance on highly variable, weather dependent forms of renewable energy generation, such as wind and solar, balancing services are needed to maintain the required frequency in the transmission system. ⚡ Never was this more apparent than on 8 October 2024, when battery energy storage systems (BESS) helped the energy system recover after the interconnector which connects the UK and Norway tripped and suddenly stopped exporting power to the UK. The system recovered thanks to fast acting frequency services, particularly BESS operations. Batteries on both sides of the interconnector were able to activate within fractions of a second to stabilise the electricity grids. 🟢 BESS will be fundamental to the UK’s future green economy – both for driving economic growth and in the race to net zero. Despite this, we know batteries are facing increasing challenges in securing planning approval, and there is an overall lack of political recognition of the important role batteries will play. It was therefore great to witness the industry coming together at the Electricity Storage Network’s Annual Conference last week, and especially to hear assurance from the Minister for Energy, Michael Shanks MP that Clean Power 2030 is a top 5 strategic priority for the Labour government. ❕ With upcoming changes across a range of issues critical to the sector, including the revenue environment, grid connections, fire safety and long duration energy storage, we are already looking ahead to what 2025 brings for battery storage. #BatteryStorage #Battery #Renewables #NetZero

A real career highlight for me last week, attending an industry roundtable with the Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP ahead of the Electricity Storage Network's annual conference. This was my first assignment in my recent appointment as chair of ESN's Planning Working Group; it is essential that the entire UK has a planning system which can deliver the renewable electricity infrastructure required to accelerate towards clean power 2030 and so I am thrilled to take on this role at such an exciting time. The current planning systems are unpredictable, providing no certainty on how long consent will take. For developers, this presents a barrier to attracting investment and delivering clean energy targets. A key bottleneck in this process is under-resourcing in decision makers (Local Planning Authorities and in Scotland, the Energy Consents Unit also). With the projected further increase in application numbers, it is imperative that we address this challenge. The conference also focussed on the Connections Reform consultation. Storage will play a key part in CP30 and Field has done a lot of work analysing the consultation data and assessing what this means for our portfolio and the wider battery industry. Our key finding, as highlighted in our consultation response, is that it is critical that the spatial capacity maps which will underpin the Reform are correct, and that transparency is provided on the methodology. The spatial maps define the capacities and technologies 'needed' for CP30 - getting this right now is imperative to ensure CP30 is focussed on the optimal capacities and technologies both from a deliverability and operability point of view.

Great to hear from Energy Minister Michael Shanks at our annual conference today that the government is listening to the storage sector. "If there are things government can do to move further or faster to give more assurances, I would say please get in touch," he said. "But come to us with specific suggestions about where you think we can improve the situation. "We are committed to making this work. We need your help to do it because yes, I can set the frameworks and the legislation and the commitment from government, but we're not going to build this as a government. We need you to be part of that with us to deliver these projects."

Just a week left until we get to do this again. We're looking forward to gathering with you all at the IET next Thursday and getting stuck into debate and discussion around: 👉 The impact of the proposed Clean Power 2030 battery storage figures from NESO 👉 The latest grid connection reforms and how they are reshaping the development process 👉 New ambition and a cap and floor for long duration energy storage 👉 More details from NESO as to the services it will need to operate a clean power system in 2030 and beyond.
