Congratulations to Allister Richards, COO of CH&CO - who has been named Chair of Springboard. Allister is an active champion of the charity’s work to promote hospitality careers to the next generation and supports disadvantaged and unemployed people of all ages and backgrounds with skills and job opportunities. For the past decade Allister has been an active member of Springboard’s board as a trustee. Our talented chefs achieved outstanding success at this year’s International Salon Culinaire, with Team Compass winning an incredible 63 awards: ⭐ 8 Best in Class 🥇 5 Gold 🥈 15 Silver 🥉 23 Bronze 📜 12 certificates of merit A standout from the show was 18-year-old Phoebe Lawson, Commis Chef, at ESS Energy, who won ‘best in show’ for her restaurant plate. She also won gold and best in class for her main course plates, two silvers, a best in class for her dessert plates and bronze for afternoon tea. Nick Vadis, Culinary Director said: “International Salon Culinaire is one of our favourite events of the year. It offers a fantastic experience for our chefs to try a new challenge and develop their skills, while showcasing our industry to others. The standard of the entries was extremely high, as always, and it’s excellent to see talent from all levels represented – from our junior apprentice chefs to our more senior chefs – and some new faces in the team this year. Today is National Supported Internships Day. Supported internships are a work-based study programme for young people aged 16-24 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and an Educational Healthcare plan (EHCP) – they are designed to help the young people gain skills and experience. We’re proud to announce the launch of “Xcelerate with Edgbaston Hospitality Hub”, in partnership with Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Birmingham Central Jobcentre.   Linking Delivery and Community Partners with employers in the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), The Hub has been developed to showcase the many opportunities within the hospitality sector to jobseekers in the area, from general job vacancies to apprentice vacancies, skills boot camps and work experience. Our recent Leadership Conference at Unity Place, Milton Keynes, expertly moderated by BBC broadcaster and journalist Kirsty Wark, was a resounding success. Teams across our business have been looking at different ways we can do more to support neurodivergent people not only in their current jobs, but also to enter into the job market too. A great example of this is our B&I business, which has updated its recruitment process and candidate journey, to improve accessibility. How? ✅ Transparency – sharing clear interview templates and publishing questions in advance so candidates can prepare with confidence. ✅ Accessible guidance that is easy to find – created well-structured careers page with sector-specific advice helping our candidates understand the process and expectations. ✅ Offer reasonable adjustments – training our hiring managers to recognise and implement adjustments tailored to individual needs. ✅ Use accessibility tools – dyslexia-friendly job adverts and accessibility settings (like ADHD-friendly and vision-impaired profiles) can make a big difference. ✅ Always support different ways of thinking – structure helps autistic candidates, advance questions benefit dyslexic applicants, and clarity reduces masking for ADHD individuals. Our One Retail team is partnering with University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust to enhance the ‘gateway to the hospital’, at their new BEACH Building in Royal Bournemouth Hospital! The main entrance will feature a 24/7 Costa Coffee with a dedicated NHS staff wellbeing area, a Co-op convenience store, championing the local community and access to healthy, ethically sourced products, and a Stock Shop. This new addition builds on our 10-year relationship with the Trust.
