Heart failure continues to present a global health concern, with a potential increase in prevalence in the foreseeable future. In Singapore, 4-5% of the population are living with heart failure, and this number is rising among seniors aged 65 and above, as our society ages. When heart failure progresses to its advanced stage, it can impact daily activities, with symptoms like breathlessness, fatigue, and swelling in the legs. At TTSH, our multi-disciplinary team of Dr Hui Qing Violet Hoon (Cardiologist), Mr Keith Chua (Physiotherapist), and Ms Lai Mei Tham (Nurse Clinician), developed a groundbreaking cardiac rehabilitation programme designed specifically for those with advanced heart failure - debunking the common misconception that this group of patients should stop living or exercising! The programme has already helped over 100 patients since its launch in November 2022, showing that with the right psychological and nutritional guidance alongside with personalised exercise training, it is possible to improve cardiovascular fitness, quality of life, and even reduce the risk of future cardiovascular issues like strokes and heart attacks! Key takeaway? Exercise-based rehab is proven and pivotal to slow down heart failure progression, and a key component which works together with medications and education to boost health outcomes. Tan Tock Seng Hospital reposted this
Colleagues at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital recently welcomed healthcare leaders from Singapore’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National Healthcare Group and Ministry of Health Holdings for a knowledge exchange visit. The visit included focused discussions on contemporary hospital design, strategic commissioning approaches, and innovative digital healthcare solutions. Paul Fitzpatrick, Director of Estates and Facilities for UHLG, and Matt Connor, Chief Information Officer for UHLG, facilitated these sessions alongside partners from architects HKS, Inc., engineers Hoare Lea, and NHS England. Clinical perspectives were provided by Lindsey Vlasman, Director of Nursing at the Royal, and Sue Ryan, Divisional Director of Nursing, who outlined evidence-based outcomes from the use of single patient rooms at the Royal. Professor Terry Jones and Chris French presented on our research and innovation work. Delegates were also given guided tours of clinical facilities, including Theatres, Outpatient Department, Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, single occupancy rooms and the Clinical Research Facility. Paul Fitzpatrick said: "It was a huge honour to welcome the Singapore delegation to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. We were able to share our journey and the challenges we overcame to successfully open the hospital in 2022. This experience created opportunities to improve the facilities before opening and ensure we provide an exceptional environment for both staff and patients. We also discussed our ambitious plans to make the site Carbon Neutral in the future and how we're working with local system partners to deliver this key objective. These international exchanges are invaluable as we learn from each other to continually improve healthcare environments and patient care."
