Tan Tock Seng Hospital’s Post

Heart failure continues to present a global health concern, with a potential increase in prevalence in the foreseeable future. In Singapore, 4-5% of the population are living with heart failure, and this number is rising among seniors aged 65 and above, as our society ages. When heart failure progresses to its advanced stage, it can impact daily activities, with symptoms like breathlessness, fatigue, and swelling in the legs. At TTSH, our multi-disciplinary team of Dr Hui Qing Violet Hoon (Cardiologist), Mr Keith Chua (Physiotherapist), and Ms Lai Mei Tham (Nurse Clinician), developed a groundbreaking cardiac rehabilitation programme designed specifically for those with advanced heart failure - debunking the common misconception that this group of patients should stop living or exercising! The programme has already helped over 100 patients since its launch in November 2022, showing that with the right psychological and nutritional guidance alongside with personalised exercise training, it is possible to improve cardiovascular fitness, quality of life, and even reduce the risk of future cardiovascular issues like strokes and heart attacks! Key takeaway? Exercise-based rehab is proven and pivotal to slow down heart failure progression, and a key component which works together with medications and education to boost health outcomes.
