Putting Genomics to Work for a Better Alberta

About us

In partnership with Genome Canada and the Province of Alberta, Genome Alberta was established in 2005 to focus on genomics as one of the central components of the life sciences in Alberta, and to help position genomics as a core research effort. We are a publicly funded not-for-profit corporation that initiates, funds, and manages genomics research and partnerships. Genome Alberta strives to be the leading source of information and administration related to genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and bioethics research in Alberta. We are dedicated to informing students, researchers, research organizations, our partners, and the public regarding opportunities and challenges in genomics and other omics fields, and in encouraging the development of a strong life sciences sector in Alberta.

ATTENTION all Alberta life sciences companies... Today is the last day to complete the SOI Survey! State of the Industry is used by all 3 levels of government and funding agencies to design policy and funding programs for start up and scale up companies in Alberta. The data is also used to market Alberta’s thriving life sciences sector to the world. As a further incentive, all companies that complete the survey will be entered into a draw for 1 of 3 $25 gift cards to a local Alberta company, or the grand prize of a $250 credit towards a BioAlberta membership or event! The survey closes in 1 day. • 🦉 We’re proud to support the Canadian BioGenome Project, contributing to the sequencing of key species like the Great Gray Owl. By sequencing its genome, we gain valuable information that scientists can use to further understand how this iconic bird adapts to a changing boreal forest ecosystem. This genomic data is particularly important in Alberta, where monitoring population health is a good indicator of biodiversity and forest ecosystem health in the face of climate change and environmental stressors (e.g., wildfires). 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗢𝘄𝗹𝘀 live primarily in boreal forests throughout much of Canada and Alaska. Sometimes these massive owls are found in parts of northern Europe and Asia. This is the 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 for this species, there are reference genomes available for 3 of the other species from this Genus. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗹𝘀 can lay between 2-5 eggs a year, the abundance of available food determines the number of eggs a female lays. Interestingly, great grey owls do not build nests, so they typically takeover the unused nests built by another large bird, such as a raptor. A big thanks to all of our scientists who worked on this reference genome and our funders Genome Canada, Genome British Columbia, Génome Québec, and Genome Alberta! Canadian BioGenome Project samples are processed and sequenced at CGEn’s three nodes: Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, McGill Genome Centre and The Centre for Applied Genomics at The Hospital for Sick Children. Genomic data was initially generated as part of CGEn’s 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗦𝗲𝗾150 program. #genomics #species #Owls #prey #predior #conservation

I am hosting the MANA 2025 conference in Banff in September this year. This conference brings together the most important thought leaders in metabolomics in North America. It is an honour to host this important event in Alberta.

‼️ The 7th Annual Metabolomics Association of North America (MANA) Conference will take place 📅 September 2-5, 2025, at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Alberta, Canada ‼️ (see the MANA 2025 website for more details: https://lnkd.in/gGwdhN9R). This exciting location is sure to inspire engaging scientific interactions among members, and we plan to take advantage of the surrounding environment in our conference activities.   👉 With that in mind, we invite attendees to submit creative ideas for engaging workshops and interactive forums that prioritize discussion, networking, and/or hands-on training on current formative topics in metabolomics. Given the exceptional venue, we encourage you to consider outdoor sessions, walking excursions, or other immersive experiences that break away from traditional formats. Our team has brainstormed activities (https://lnkd.in/gnHEEMMb) you may wish to incorporate. This is a great opportunity to craft a session that is not only intellectually stimulating, but also fully engaging for participants.    👉 Please use this FORM (https://lnkd.in/g7tq_tTz) to submit a workshop/forum proposal. The deadline for submission of workshop proposals is 📅 Monday April 28, 2025.    👉 Questions or requests for guidance in developing your sessions can be sent to vicepresident@metabolomicsna.org. Please visit the MANA website (https://lnkd.in/geRXYkCA) to view past workshops and interactive forums held at previous MANA conferences.

🍃Celebrating #WorldForestDay and the important role forests play in maintaining healthy ecosystems by purifying our air, storing carbon, and preserving biodiversity while supporting livelihoods and industries across Alberta and Canada! In the past two decades, mountain pine beetle has killed more than 20M hectares of lodgepole pine forests in western Canada. Genome Alberta is supporting initiatives to improve forest resiliency through genomics— one such initiative is the Transformative Risk Assessment and Forest Resilience Using Genomic Tools (TRIA-FoR) project. Co-led by Dr. Janice Cooke (University of Alberta) and Dr. Catherine Cullingham (Carleton University), this initiative tackles the mountain pine beetle epidemic and delivers actionable insights for resilience and recovery. Through TRIA-FoR, we were able to: - Reveal beetle expansion into jack pine, signalling broader threats to the boreal forest and informing management strategies. - Identifiy genetic markers in surviving trees, guiding reforestation with pest-resistant stock. - Model future beetle spread, equipping decision-makers with insights to safeguard forests against future outbreaks 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQ7bmhQ6 Photos credit to Marion Mayerhofer, Antonia Musso, and Colleen Fortier. #Lumber #AlbertaForestry #Sustainability #PestManagement
