When her son Kautik was diagnosed with autism, Mukti Reddy felt there was something more at play. Despite barriers to genetic testing and a medical system focused only on autism, Mukti kept pushing for answers. Her persistence eventually led to a diagnosis of ASH1L syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. Inspired by her journey, Mukti co-founded Care4ASH1L to support other families facing similar challenges and to advocate for increased rare disease awareness. Can plants inherit climate coping skills? A fascinating The University of British Columbia study funded by Genome BC has uncovered how Dryas octopetalata, a small tundra plant related to strawberries, can change its DNA regulation to cope with warmer temperatures. Researchers tested plants from controlled tundra locations and from artificially warmed plots and found that when these plants were exposed to warmer conditions, they changed how parts of their DNA was regulated (using something called "DNA methylation"). Even more exciting? Some of These changes were passed on to their baby plants! 🤯 This means plants might be able to adapt to climate change faster than we thought, which is super important for our food and forests. Imagine crops that are naturally heat-resistant! This research gives us hope for a more sustainable future. What do you think?
