We were proud to host the MIT REAP Edmonton Townhall in our space yesterday—bringing the community together to advance our city’s innovation ecosystem. Our CEO, Tom Viinikka, introduced fellow MIT REAP Edmonton team members Cam Linke, Stephanie Enders, Mark Summers, Paul Bakhmut, Andrew MacIsaac, Darren Fast, Charles Wong, ICD.D, Kristina Milke and Tim Lynn which lead into a panel discussion on how cross-sector collaboration can accelerate entrepreneurial growth in Edmonton. The panel, moderated by Christiana Manzocco, MIT REAP Team Edmonton Member and Director of Investments at Alberta Enterprise Corporation (AEC), sparked thoughtful dialogue on how to better align our academic, corporate, entrepreneurial, risk-capital, and government sectors to drive meaningful impact. By coming together across disciplines and sectors, we can help startups de-risk, scale, and succeed—right here in Edmonton. We’re energized by the momentum and excited to continue building a globally competitive innovation ecosystem, right from the heart of our city. P.S. shoutout to our friends at API for the awesome photo!

About us
When you’re talking about innovation in Edmonton, the potential is endless. From the sticky problems we solve to the brilliant people who solve them, this has always been a place that sees opportunity instead of barriers, that supports and encourages one another, and a place where people come to do big things – because they can. Edmonton Unlimited is all about harnessing the power of possibility and bringing the best of Edmonton to the world. It is welcoming, inclusive and unconstrained by traditional definitions of innovation, business or entrepreneurship. Anyone can be an innovator — in any sector, in any industry, and from any background. But innovation always starts with an idea. Edmonton Unlimited provides the tools and support that our city’s innovators, big thinkers and problem solvers need to turn their ideas into solutions. We work with innovators at every stage, from those with an early idea to those with built-out solutions. Edmonton is a global innovation capital and we are inviting people of all genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, experiences, abilities and voices to the innovation table, to help tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Our organization was created in May 2020, with unanimous City Council support and a broad mandate to harness the transformational power of innovation and community building. Together we are building an inclusive global innovation capital – a city of innovators tackling the world’s stickiest issues, including the climate emergency, food security, public health, digital inclusion, social justice and Reconciliation, to name a few.

Meet Shalon M.—Senior Venture Portfolio Analyst & IP Specialist Shalon works with startups from pre-seed to growth stage, helping founders get real about their progress and what it’ll take to scale. With a background in physics and a brain wired for systems thinking, she thrives on turning complex ideas into clear strategies. She’s part data analyst, part startup coach—whether it’s advising on IP or guiding ventures through growth with real numbers to back it up. Her kids keep her inspired (and on her toes), delivering a daily crash course in distilling big ideas into kindergartener-level sound bites—an unexpectedly perfect skill for startup support. Off the clock, Shalon and her husband love exploring new coffee roasts and pretending they still have time for video games. She’s also a self-proclaimed fitness fanatic: part powerlifter, mediocre CrossFitter, wannabe runner, spin enthusiast, and always game to try any fitness challenge at least once. #MeetTheTeam #EdmontonUnlimited
