Hub early-career researcher Elsemi Olwage (University of Namibia) spoke yesterday at the Hub’s Satellite event in the lead up to the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona. ▶ Watch a short recording of Elsemi's speech here: https://lnkd.in/e2n5ZCSy ❔ In this Spotlight Q&A, Elsemi gives advice to fellow early-career researchers interested in transdisciplinary ocean research. Q: WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO FELLOW EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS WORKING ON A GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT? A: “Working from the Global South can be challenging, given the still persistent global inequalities in funding and knowledge production. It can result in power imbalances and lack of equal knowledge exchange. One key practice can be for early career researchers to try to be involved from the start with co-writing and co-designing the project proposal. Secondly, early career researchers should contribute to and ethically align with the project’s Code of Practice. This will ensure that project partners can create a shared culture of learning and heighten long-term local impact, including mutuality in knowledge production.” -> Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/eThghzAu 🌊 Elsemi is a researcher on the ‘Hurinin Project’ in Namibia which is an Indigenous youth-led art-based research project on ocean cultural heritage. This blog post reflects on the key insights which emerged from the research process as well as the challenges that were experienced. -> https://lnkd.in/e9-ir7Fs 📽 We also recommend to watch our short film ‘Hurinin, People of the Sea’ that tells how the marginalised Topnaar people in #Namibia seek recognition for their ocean-related heritage, knowledge and rights. -> https://lnkd.in/dnDzD2e2 #oceandecade #oceandecade24 #ECRs #earlycareerresearchers #southernafrica #oceanculture #artsbasedresearch #transdisciplinary #ourocean #SDG14 #SDGs #universityofnamibia #UNAM University of Namibia Conservation Namibia oceanheritage

This week, we celebrate the International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South, highlighting the pivotal role STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation) plays in advancing sustainable development across the Global South. For many developing countries, embracing these fields is not just about progress—it's about survival and catching up in a rapidly evolving world. In places like Angola, where I've had the privilege to contribute, projects like the Luanda Science Center (LCC), which was built by the company I worked for, demonstrate the transformative power of STI. It’s not just a science center; it’s a beacon of possibility and inspiration for the community. Explore more about LCC and see some photos: https://lnkd.in/dSws9QJU By fostering environments where learning and innovation flourish, we can empower nations to craft their own futures. Let's continue to advocate for and invest in STI to bridge gaps and build brighter futures in the Global South. #ScienceDay #GlobalSouth #LuandaScienceCenter #SustainableDevelopment

What is citizen science and how can it be used? 🗝️ This is the focus for an #online #workshop targeting researchers and others interested in learning about citizen science, organised by the EUTOPIA Connected Community on Tourism and Experiences on January 30 at 13.30-15.00 CET. #Citizenscience is scientific research that is entirely or partially conducted by citizens, often in collaboration with or supervised by professional researchers. The aim of the workshop is to give a general introduction to citizen science, with examples from #tourism, #experiences and other areas. The workshop will also include a guided brainstorm on project ideas. Moderators of the workshop are Sven De Boeck and Floor Keersmaekers, research outreach officers and trainers from Citizen Science Contact Point at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), member of the EUTOPIA university alliance. Are you interested in attending? Please contact Emma Björner at emma.bjorner@gu.se by January 20. Workshop participants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. Welcome! 📢 Now online, the conclusions of our Reciprocity Day at the Science Summit 2024 during the 79th #UNGA. Joining forces with Norges forskningsråd to bring together experts from around the globe, we explored the critical importance of freedom to carry out research, equitable access to scientific information and research infrastructures, while considering science as a public good. The dialogue emphasised that co-creation of a human-centred, peaceful future is essential to meeting global challenges and achieving the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. This requires rethinking the way we collaborate internationally, ensuring academic freedom, equity, and inclusion. What are the key takeaways from the discussion? 🔑 Place people and their diverse backgrounds at the heart of equitable partnerships, built on trust, dignity, and respect. 🔑 Embrace open science to ensure equitable access to scientific knowledge and information, and equitable access to research infrastructures, crucial for meaningful collaboration 🔑Prioritise scientific collaboration across borders as part of a country's strategic development. 🔑 Train researchers in enhanced inclusive collaboration methods, promoting South-South and North-South collaborations. 🔑 Facilitate the logistical aspects of global collaboration such as easing visa processes. 🔑Acknowledge the value of indigenous and local knowledge systems. Thanks to Mari Sundli Tveit, Declan Kirrane, Alejandro Adem, Matthias Koenig, Tolullah Oni, Claudia Romano, Jacqueline Ottmann, Dr Dorothy Ngila, Gabriela Ramos, Thandi Mgwebi, Amna Baloch, Osamu Kobayashi, Gagandeep Kang, Eduardo Ortega-Barria, pushkar sharma, Prue Williams and Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes Download the conclusions here: bit.ly/40xAQPp

Today is the last day of the Science Forum (#SFSA2024) and it has been a jam-packed programme. I was especially excited to see the South African Public Relationship with Science Report launch. This study, conducted by the HSRC (Human Sciences Research Council), gives crucial insight into the public's perception of science and will assist researchers, institutions and science communicators in improving their dialogue with the South African Public. The statistic that jumped out for me is that, in terms of priorities, the South African public views space as the lowest priority in science. It is therefore crucial that space stakeholders align their messaging to emphasise that space technology has the potential to have a lasting impact on the daily lives of South African citizens. Space stakeholders can no longer assume the general public will buy into space endeavours because "space is cool". We have to demonstrate impact in everything we do.
