Here is our next-gen weather satellite: Metop-SGA1! Scheduled for launch in August aboard an Ariane 6 rocket, Metop-SGA1 will be the first satellite in the EUMETSAT Polar System – Second Generation (EPS-SG) programme. Seeing the satellite in person highlighted the scale and complexity of this mission. Equipped with advanced instruments - including the Copernicus Sentinel-5 mission - Metop-SGA1 will deliver vital data for forecasting, climate and air pollution. Sentinel-5 will play a crucial role in monitoring air quality and atmospheric composition, delivering detailed measurements of trace gases that impact both human health and the environment. Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

ICYMI, this week the 2024 European State of the Climate report went out, highlighting the serious impacts the continent faced from extreme weather - with Europe being the fastest-warming on the planet. Satellites play a key role in climate monitoring and EUMETSAT’s Meteosat geostationary weather satellites have been providing data for climate monitoring over Europe and Africa since 1978, building up in the process one of the longest time-series of climate data collected by satellite in the world. This week, our image of the week is from the Meteosat-12 weather satellite keeping an eye on Earth from 36,000km away in space. 🌡️ 2024 was a year of contrasts across Europe, with extreme heatwaves and large wildfires, alongside flooding and drought. 🏗️ An increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events poses increased risks to the built environment and infrastructure in Europe, and to the services they provide. 🌆 Yet, progress shines through: 51% of European cities now have adaptation plans, a leap from 26% in 2018. EUMETSAT’s video captures this dynamic year from swirling storms to shifting seasons - all captured from space! ⚡ More must be done. Let’s harness these insights for bolder #ClimateAction! 📘 Full #ESOTC2024 report: https://lnkd.in/eQ-xGfzG

In complete awe of the imagery of our weather from the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite, which became operational a few months ago. Thank you EUMETSAT for sending this "camera" into space to show us the clouds above us. I feel the urge to share the cloudscape over Europe, shot by the MTG FCI imager about 10 minutes ago and received at Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut.

Energienutzerforum statt.

Europe just experienced its hottest year on record. 🌡️ The 2024 European State of the Climate report paints a clear picture of the continent heating faster than the global average, with growing risks from heatwaves, floods, and wildfires. Satellite data from EUMETSAT programmes and Satellite Application Facilities' data products played a vital role in the report. Sunshine duration and sea ice extent, for example, help build a clearer picture of #ClimateChange impacts across Europe. 🛰️ Read more about the findings from EUMETSAT Climate Product Expert Rob Roebeling, and Science Writer Adam Gristwood, here: bit.ly/4lCulD0 #ESOTC2024 #CopernicusClimate
