This week, we celebrate the International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South, highlighting the pivotal role STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation) plays in advancing sustainable development across the Global South. For many developing countries, embracing these fields is not just about progress—it's about survival and catching up in a rapidly evolving world. In places like Angola, where I've had the privilege to contribute, projects like the Luanda Science Center (LCC), which was built by the company I worked for, demonstrate the transformative power of STI. It’s not just a science center; it’s a beacon of possibility and inspiration for the community. Explore more about LCC and see some photos: https://lnkd.in/dSws9QJU By fostering environments where learning and innovation flourish, we can empower nations to craft their own futures. Let's continue to advocate for and invest in STI to bridge gaps and build brighter futures in the Global South. #ScienceDay #GlobalSouth #LuandaScienceCenter #SustainableDevelopment

Science Europe was pleased to take part in the opening session of the 2nd Global Diamond OA, now underway in Cape Town, South Africa. Lidia Borrell-Damian, Science Europe Secretary General highlighted the continuing development of the #DiamondOA community which is organising at a national, regional - and increasingly - global level to build a scholarly communication ecosystem made by researchers, with researchers, and for researchers. As support continues to grow for such initiatives as Diamond Open Access, the Summit is a welcome opportunity to discuss how to sustain and take forward this collaboration. Hub early-career researcher Elsemi Olwage (University of Namibia) spoke yesterday at the Hub’s Satellite event in the lead up to the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona. ▶ Watch a short recording of Elsemi's speech here: https://lnkd.in/e2n5ZCSy ❔ In this Spotlight Q&A, Elsemi gives advice to fellow early-career researchers interested in transdisciplinary ocean research. Q: WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO FELLOW EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS WORKING ON A GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT? A: “Working from the Global South can be challenging, given the still persistent global inequalities in funding and knowledge production. It can result in power imbalances and lack of equal knowledge exchange. One key practice can be for early career researchers to try to be involved from the start with co-writing and co-designing the project proposal. Secondly, early career researchers should contribute to and ethically align with the project’s Code of Practice. This will ensure that project partners can create a shared culture of learning and heighten long-term local impact, including mutuality in knowledge production.” -> Read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/eThghzAu 🌊 Elsemi is a researcher on the ‘Hurinin Project’ in Namibia which is an Indigenous youth-led art-based research project on ocean cultural heritage. This blog post reflects on the key insights which emerged from the research process as well as the challenges that were experienced. -> https://lnkd.in/e9-ir7Fs 📽 We also recommend to watch our short film ‘Hurinin, People of the Sea’ that tells how the marginalised Topnaar people in #Namibia seek recognition for their ocean-related heritage, knowledge and rights. -> https://lnkd.in/dnDzD2e2 #oceandecade #oceandecade24 #ECRs #earlycareerresearchers #southernafrica #oceanculture #artsbasedresearch #transdisciplinary #ourocean #SDG14 #SDGs #universityofnamibia #UNAM University of Namibia Conservation Namibia oceanheritage

The main Arctic event of this spring, Arctic Congress 2024, is going on in Bodø, Norway, and the Arctic Centre has a huge delegation in place! We managed to get 20 colleagues in a group photo and still some were missing. We do not have statistics but this may well be an all-time record of Arctic Centre participation in an international conference. Arctic Centre researchers are actively participating and presenting in a number of scientific sessions as well as networking with international colleagues. The Bodø Arctic Congress 2024 is a combination of three events: The International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS), UArctic Congress and High North Dialogue, and it gathers well over 1000 participants to the current European Capital of Culture. When it comes to the contents, the current situation in geopolitics and its effects to Arctic science and Arctic cooperation are discussed in many sessions.

📢 Now online, the conclusions of our Reciprocity Day at the Science Summit 2024 during the 79th #UNGA. Joining forces with Norges forskningsråd to bring together experts from around the globe, we explored the critical importance of freedom to carry out research, equitable access to scientific information and research infrastructures, while considering science as a public good. The dialogue emphasised that co-creation of a human-centred, peaceful future is essential to meeting global challenges and achieving the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. This requires rethinking the way we collaborate internationally, ensuring academic freedom, equity, and inclusion. What are the key takeaways from the discussion? 🔑 Place people and their diverse backgrounds at the heart of equitable partnerships, built on trust, dignity, and respect. 🔑 Embrace open science to ensure equitable access to scientific knowledge and information, and equitable access to research infrastructures, crucial for meaningful collaboration 🔑Prioritise scientific collaboration across borders as part of a country's strategic development. 🔑 Train researchers in enhanced inclusive collaboration methods, promoting South-South and North-South collaborations. 🔑 Facilitate the logistical aspects of global collaboration such as easing visa processes. 🔑Acknowledge the value of indigenous and local knowledge systems. Thanks to Mari Sundli Tveit, Declan Kirrane, Alejandro Adem, Matthias Koenig, Tolullah Oni, Claudia Romano, Jacqueline Ottmann, Dr Dorothy Ngila, Gabriela Ramos, Thandi Mgwebi, Amna Baloch, Osamu Kobayashi, Gagandeep Kang, Eduardo Ortega-Barria, pushkar sharma, Prue Williams and Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes Download the conclusions here: bit.ly/40xAQPp

This new special issue zooms in on agents of change in old-industrial and non-metropolitan regions. Even though old-industrial and non-metropolitan regions share symptoms of lock-in related to their industrial heritage and specialization, it is not uncommon that coalitions of actors engage in local change processes, combining local and non-local knowledge and resources. However, the outcomes of such engagement are also contingent on the particular contexts. The special issue sheds light on context conditions of local agency such as the relationship between centrality and peripherality, uneven power relations, the processes of centralization or devolution, spatial reorganization of production, and the making of development visions and spatial narratives The special issue highlights the potentials and the need for place-based agency that emerges around social, economic, and political arrangements, as opposed to more narrow firm- and competition-based arrangements. To encourage more locally embedded and supported visions and actions, this special issue indicates the need for national and European policies that entail responsibility (in dealing with environmental and social risks and providing access to all elements of the foundational economy), multi-scalarity (a consistent arrangement of national, regional, and local policies and institutions), and sensitivity to local contexts, while supporting bottom-up initiatives and placing local agents in the focus of policy action. The papers draw insights from detailed case studies all around Europe. I thank Nadir Kinossian for taking us on board on the exciting Agents of Change in Old Industrial Regions project, and all wonderful colleagues who shared our learning journey.
