Imagine driving your car with a faulty fuel gauge that's systematically off. You’d probably rethink every mile, right? 🤔 This is the reality for many developers operating with inaccurate state-of-charge (SOC) estimates: either oversize your energy storage systems or leave money on the table through suboptimal performance. In partnership with Powin, Tierra Climate conducted a new study that reveals just how critical SOC accuracy is for optimizing the performance and profitability of battery assets, especially as markets trend towards increased energy arbitrage participation. Each 1% increase in SOC estimation error reduces a system’s usable energy capacity by ~1.2%. For revenue, the impact varies: • 0.20% less ancillary service revenue per 1% increase in SOC error • 0.82% less energy arbitrage revenue per 1% increase in SOC error For ancillary services, the impacts are even more meaningful when you compare the effects of over-estimation versus under-estimation of SOC. We’ve been longtime fans of MCJ, so it’s a real privilege to see our CEO Jacob Mansfield featured in their latest monthly newsletter. ⚡ At Tierra Climate, we’ve worked hard to spotlight the important role of energy storage and the nuances around its emissions impact. While in many cases batteries can increase emissions, we believe that the right tools and incentives can make the difference. 🛠️ In the piece below, Jacob goes into detail on how the key to unlocking broad corporate sustainability support for energy storage lies in revisions to Scope 2 carbon accounting standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). In our opinion, energy storage is perhaps the most important piece to the energy transition to get right - here's why: "The U.S. currently operates over 700 gigawatts (GW) of fossil fuel plants. Reaching Net Zero will require converting every combustible resource to some combination of carbon-free energy generation and energy storage. Without assuming any changes to the demand side, such a drastic change to the supply side grid mix was already a tall order. But climate change is intensifying summers and winters, shattering demand records left and right. Now add on unprecedented load growth not seen since the 1950’s fundamentally driven by widespread electrification, industrial reshoring, and AI demand, and the task is even more colossal. What happens if we don’t build all the batteries we need? We face some grim choices: backslide into reliance on fossil fuels, overbuild renewables and curtail excess energy, or risk grid reliability issues, which are already emerging." We are thrilled to announce that Tierra Climate's CTO Emma Konet has been selected by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) to serve on the Scope 2 Technical Working Group. 🎉 Chosen from over 1,300 applicants, Emma will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of GHG Protocol standards and guidance, which are undergoing the largest revision in over a decade. The Technical Working Groups (TWG) are crucial in developing the technical content needed to meet the evolving demands of global emissions accounting. Reflecting on her selection, Emma said "energy storage is rapidly becoming a pivotal technology to decarbonize the power grid, which is why it's absolutely essential that the impact of storage is considered in the GHGP Scope 2 revision." Alexander Bassen, Independent Standards Board Chair, also praised the selection process: "I’m incredibly impressed at the wealth of expertise across all four Technical Working Groups. With such a high caliber of members, I’m confident that the materials the TWGs craft will be innovative and fit for purpose in this new era of GHG accounting.” With deep expertise in wholesale energy markets and hands-on experience operating some of the earliest grid-scale energy storage systems, Emma brings a wealth of knowledge that will be crucial in this new era of decarbonization.
