The Exchange aims to confront urgent climate impacts and develop innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
About us
The New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative model for accelerating climate change solutions for New York City and beyond. Powered by its strong partnerships and future home on Governors Island, The Exchange will use education, research, an innovation hub, job training, and public programs to prepare communities to respond to climate challenges. The Exchange is based on a simple idea: collaboration works. The Exchange’s partner network includes climate experts, researchers, educators, business leaders, and community organizers who are working together to tackle the effects of climate change. Expected to open in 2028, The Exchange’s home on Governors Island will be a beacon for sustainable and resilient urban environments around the world, using renewable energy and zero-waste technologies to generate more energy than it consumes. The Exchange also aspires to be New York City’s first large-scale mass timber development and first Living Building Challenges certification. Together, The Exchange’s partner network, physical campus, and extensive offerings will explore and develop climate solutions focused on justice and inclusion; the relationship between energy, water, and food systems; and sustainable urban environments. Opportunities to explore and get involved with The Exchange will be available before construction starts.

I appreciate the invitation from co-chairs Professor Linda Bilmes and Mayor Mauricio Rodas to participate in yesterday's UN DESA Committee of Experts on Public Administration discussion on challenges communities face in addressing the rising incidence of extreme heat in cities around the world. My comments drew on experience in New York City and other cities around the world, highlighting where gains have been made and the challenges that remain, including: -- gaps in the availability of information about the variability of temperature around most cities, meaning policymakers may fail to properly identify neighborhoods most in need of policy attention or investment support. (For example, at the time of the meeting, on a cool spring afternoon in New York, the 23 official weather stations around NYC showed temperatures varied by 8-degrees (F) across the city.) -- multi-jurisdictional challenges where responsibilities for different issues can sit at the city, regional, state, or national levels -- the inability of many scientists/experts to make their research/insights accessible to the lay public or policy communities -- a failure to fully account for the economic impacts that rising heat can have around a city. Health impacts or deaths among vulnerable populations may attract the most attention, but students forced to study in schools lacking sufficient cooling may experience diminished educational outcomes, affecting their long term earning potential. Going forward, The New York Climate Exchange hopes to work on issues like this in cities around the world, working with partners to identify practical solutions that can be deployed at speed and scale.

"Later is too late to save the things that we love." – Miranda Massie 🌊 This arts & oceans pop-up is just the beginning of what's possible when we come together to listen, learn and take action!
We are grateful for last Wednesday’s evening of music, dialogue, and community at Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC)! It was a delight to partner with The New York Climate Exchange, Met Orchestra Musicians, and PAC NYC, centering Mālama I Ke Kai, the Hawaiian proverb meaning “care for the ocean.” The evening included an introduction by Victoria Cerullo of The New York Climate Exchange, powerful performances of Raise Hawaiki and E Mālama I Ke Kai by Hawai‘i-born composer Michael-Thomas Foumai, and an inspiring conversation with Zoe Martin-Doike of Met Orchestra Musicians, Lara Williams of Bloomberg Philanthropies, Illusion Rivera of Billion Oyster Project, and moderator Miranda Massie of the Climate Museum. Mahalo to all who joined us in honoring the ocean through music and climate action 🌎🌊 Photos by Sari Goodfriend

Last week we teamed up with The Municipal Art Society of New York and Pratt Institute to kick off a new event series on innovative design for a changing climate. The breakfast, at Skanska's beautiful, new space, focused on the challenges and opportunities of using #masstimber at scale — in The Exchange's Climate Hub, NYCEDC's Mass Timber Studio, and beyond. Thank you to SOM's Julia Murphy AIA, LEED AP, EDC's Jesse Weiss, Skanska's Matt Krenek, Lindsey Wikstrom at Mattaforma, and Keri Butler from MAS, for the lively discussion. 📸 Chiravi Patel at Skanska.
