For a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline.
About us
The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) lifts up the voices of the people in the debates that shape New York’s built environment and leads the way toward a more livable city from sidewalk to skyline. MAS envisions a future in which all New Yorkers share in the richness of city life—where growth is balanced, character endures, and a resilient future is secured. Since 1893, our advocacy efforts have led to the creation of the New York City Planning Commission, Public Design Commission, Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Tribute in Light; the preservation of Grand Central Terminal, the lights of Times Square, and the Garment District; the conservation of more than 50 works of public art; and the founding of such civic organizations as the Public Art Fund, the New York Landmarks Conservancy, P.S. 1, the Historic Districts Council, the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy, and the Waterfront Alliance.

MAS was proud to partner with New Yorkers for Parks, New York Law School and the Play Fair Coalition on Tuesday evening’s Mayoral Candidate Forum on Parks, Recreation and Open Space. Candidates spoke about the importance of the public realm to the health of our communities and closing inequitable gaps in funding for park spaces. Ideas were floated ranging from a Deputy Mayor for Quality of Life to exploring additional revenue streams for agency funding. Chronic disinvestment in the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation has been a decades-long challenge – but it doesn’t have to be our future. Prioritizing funding and maintenance of our public realm cannot be overstated, as these spaces are essential to our wellbeing and health, and are critical infrastructure in the fight to address climate change and support our long-term sustainability goals. The City must fund these spaces like the City funds public infrastructure to ensure that they can be designed to be functional and resilient, as well as useable, maintained, and safe. We look forward to the candidates continuing the conversation around the essential role of parks in our quality of life – New York City depends on it. Thank you to The Municipal Art Society of New York for visiting us in #MorrisPark, and creating on April 3rd a beautiful evening of “Enduring Culture” in the Bronx. From the times of the Morris Park Race Track, to today’s melting pot of Italian, Albanian, Hispanic, Yemeni and so many other ethnicities, the #MorrisPark community proved itself resilient, vibrant, thriving and ever-changing. Thanks to the @cb11bx @dm_warneke for hosting, to the great speakers from the @eastbronx_historyforum and the Bronx Muslim Center and to all local businesses for the delicious treats! Special thanks to Eduardo Carmelo Dañobeytia - our 2nd project together! Photos: MAS and historic records.

On Thursday, April 3, we gathered with the Morris Park community at CB 11 for an Enduring Culture Spotlight. The event featured a conversation with Richard Vitacco (president, East Bronx History Forum), Dr. Camelia Tepelus (executive director, Morris Park Business Improvement District), and Yahay Obeid (community advocate and former CB11 chair). The conversation reflected upon the neighborhood’s early history as a racetrack and its culturally rich commercial corridor that weaves together food and traditions from Italy, Albania, Yemen, and beyond. Guests enjoyed local Yemeni food from Oasis Mediterranean Restaurant, Italian food from Patricia's of Morris Park, plus tea and coffee from Finjan Café. CB 11 generously hosted the event. After the conversation, attendees shared what they love most about their neighborhood and what Enduring Culture means to them, including supporting locally owned businesses, living in homes with character, keeping multiple traditions alive, and sharing heritage with others. This Enduring Culture Spotlight is part of our Enduring Culture Initiative, which aims to develop an expanded and multivocal historic preservation vision for New York City, where heritage and places that contribute to a neighborhood’s history and culture are protected and celebrated. Enduring Culture is supported by the New York Community Trust and the Mellon Foundation. Last week, members of the MAS Richard Morris Hunt Patron Program enjoyed a private hardhat tour of the Davis Center at the Harlem Meer with project team leaders Christopher Nolan, Susan T Rodriguez, and John Doherty. The group explored everything from the renovated swimming pool and ice rink, the striking interior and green roof of the new Davis Center, and the surrounding landscape. We were thrilled to have an up-close look at this wonderful new amenity for the East Harlem community, which preserves original elements while remaking the site into a model for sustainable open space. Many thanks to Central Park Conservancy! Richard Morris Hunt Patrons enjoy invitations to behind-the-scenes tours throughout the year, experiencing our city’s most innovative, historic, and exciting places with the experts who shape them. The Municipal Art Society of New York expresses its profound sadness at the passing of David M. Childs. David first joined the MAS Board of Directors in 1986. He was actively involved through 2012, serving as Board Chairman from 2009 to 2011, and afterwards served as a Director Emeritus until the end of his life. Under his leadership, MAS pursued a rigorous advocacy program including campaigns for Coney Island, the Garment District, the redevelopment of Penn Station and the Farley Post Office (Moynihan Station), the launch of the MAS Summit, and so much more. We are saddened to lose his voice of reason and enthusiasm. Through his designs for 7 World Trade (which we awarded our MASterworks Award in 2006 for “Best New Building”) and One World Trade, David helped transform a site of national tragedy into a beacon of hope and perseverance. These are only some of his many iconic contributions to the built environment of New York City. We send our condolences to his wife, Annie; his children, Joshua, Nicholas, and Jocelyn; and his colleagues at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

Kick-off your April with an in-person or virtual MAS tour! Visit Manhattan, Brooklyn, and/or Staten Island with us. MAS is proud to host New York City’s oldest walking tour program, since 1956. Saturday 4/5 "Several now-fashionable neighborhoods intersect along this fabled thoroughfare, including the East Village, NoHo, and Lower East Side. Join architectural historian Matt Postal for a walking tour that includes a redesigned Cooper Square, a vest pocket plaza named for five Black men who were early recipients of land grants in the area, and four buildings designed by architects who were Pritzker Prize winners. Saturday 4/6 "Often used as the backdrop in movies to portray “the real New York,” Bensonhurst and Bath Beach have been greatly influenced by the waves of immigrant groups that have made their homes here. Founded as part of Brooklyn’s original 6 towns by possibly the first free Muslim American settler, they are now famed for their Italian and Chinese communities. We will groove around both neighborhoods with tour guide Zack Rhodes, visiting a site named after an Italian national hero, learn about the murder/mystery of one of New York’s earliest public park champions, and gaze upon the Brooklyn home of Frankenstein, Superman, and Elvis. Wednesday 4/9 "Around Staten Island Aboard the John J Harvey": All aboard a historic vessel as historian James Russiello virtually leads us around the perimeter of Staten Island as seen from the water. You’ll launch from Manhattan’s Pier 66, venturing down the Hudson until the breadth of the Staten Island coast reveals itself. Richmond County is an island; its waterfront, both celebrated and secret–hidden in plain sight, is always waiting to be explored more than just the famous views that most New Yorkers and tourists cherish from the decks of the Staten Island Ferry. Each landmark will be discussed and investigated with historic photos and research through only the way a virtual tour can reveal. 🔗 Learn more about MAS Tours, view the calendar, and buy tickets here: https://lnkd.in/egHSsB-d 🏙️ Led by expert guides with deep knowledge and passion for architecture, art, urban history, preservation, neighborhoods, and street life. #NewYorkCity #Manhattan #Brooklyn #StatenIsland #Tours #History #TourGuide #NYC #Nonprofit
