Restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives

About us

Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Oyster reefs have the power to transform NY Harbor. They provide habitat for hundreds of marine species, filter water, and can help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage. Since its founding in 2014, Billion Oyster Project has reintroduced 122 million oysters, engaging 8,000+ students, 15,000+ volunteers, and 70+ NYC restaurant partners. The project’s hands-on science and restoration curriculum is taught at 70+ schools across the city. The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, a maritime high-school located on Governors Island, is the flagship school of the Billion Oyster Project. Harbor School students contribute to Billion Oyster Project as part of their Career and Technical Education (CTE) experience—growing oysters, designing and building oyster reef structures, diving to monitor reefs, operating boats, performing marine biology research, and more. • BIG THANKS to our generous waterfront colleagues and friends, Stasinos Marine LLC Marine, an NYC, family-owned and operatd marine towing company that successfully delivered our Ecodock to @Hughes Brothers Inc, who is helping us refit it.  Alongside New York Harbor School staff, students, and alumni, BOP staff disconnected our Ecodock from the inside of the Pier 101 ferry barge to be towed to Hughes Brothers’ Red Hook Dry Dock for a refit and thorough restoration —including sandblasting and painting the pontoon hulls and fabricating a new deck structure— just in time for our upcoming field season. If that’s not cool enough, some of our Statisnos team members are also New York Harbor School alumni. • What makes a site a great home for oysters–particularly in developed and dynamic urban waterways? 🦪 That's a tough question to answer centuries after #NYC's 220,000 acres of reef were destroyed with no written data to crunch. However, every data point gathered by this #community of restoration practitioners moving forward will build that database and inform our future research. 👉 Swipe to learn about the data we're gathering from sites in #TheBronx and #Queens with some high reef restoration potential that are beginning to answer the question. Green synergies in the harbor of New York 🌇 While visiting New York this week, the Danish Minister for Environment and Gender Equality, Magnus Heunicke, had the opportunity to learn more about New York’s focus on future-proofing the city through a visit to Governors Island. Located in New York’s harbor, Governor’s Island is an official hub for green innovation, including energy and environmental protection. The establishment of both a research center and partnerships with private companies and educational institutions are expected to generate new green jobs as well as possibilities for Danish and other international companies. The tour started at the Billion Oyster Project which is restoring the natural oysters reefs, which also help protect New York City from storm damage. With guidance from Lauren Wang, Director of Climate Programs, the minister also got an insight into Governors Island’s plans for expanding the island’s green initiatives and developing new green spaces for the New Yorkers. The tour was completed with a visit to The Exchange, a first-of-its-kind center for developing and implementing climate solutions 🌱

  • 📁 Our day at the office when the weather gets warmer–cleaning and processing oyster, clam, and scallop shells collected weekly from New York City restaurants. After #volunteers run the belt and pack these shells into suspended oyster stacks, they're ready to be set with larvae and submerged in NYC waters to become oyster reefs of their own. 🦪 Get out of your office and come to ours for a corporate volunteer day this year! A day with us makes all the difference, and it's truly as much fun as this video sounds.
