Taking some of the #lessons that are emerging from our response in LA, we pulled together some important considerations NCG members and others in #philanthropy can use to develop strategies for your own disaster and crisis response portfolios: 🔶 #Collaboration is essential during times of crisis, but relationships are built on trust, and trust takes time to build. 🔶 Long-term #recovery is incredibly complex and challenging. 🔶 #Fund disaster preparedness and prevention. 🔶 #Invest in the power of #communities to develop, pilot, and scale policies that will support them in winning hard-fought campaign victories. 📖 Read More: https://lnkd.in/gBPthwEu

🤝 Last week, our climate (Katie Oran, Kirin Kumar) and democracy (Liana Molina, Victoria Rodarte) teams joined with members and Philanthropy California partners - SoCal Grantmakers and Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties - for our first in-person advocacy day at the State Capitol since the pandemic. They met with several assembly members, Senators, their staff, and key state agencies like Health and Human Services, the California Environmental Protection Agency, and the Secretary of State. These visits were an opportunity to #educate #policymakers about the philanthropic sector's role, the importance of cross-sector #collaboration, and issues of concern to many of our institutions: #multiracial #democracy, #climate and #disaster resilience, and nonprofit #sustainability. 🌱 This year’s Sacramento Advocacy Day reaffirmed the necessity for foundations to engage in building and #strengthening relationships with government leaders, educating them about philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, and planting the seeds for partnership and collaboration, especially in light of the shifts and challenges we’re facing now and will face in the future. 🔗 Stay in the loop:👇 🗳️https://lnkd.in/g7aUfp83 🍃https://lnkd.in/g6-zhjfm

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of joining with colleagues and members of Northern California Grantmakers and Philanthropy California partners - SoCal Grantmakers and Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties - for Sacramento Advocacy Day. We met with several policy makers in both houses of the legislature as well as key agencies to uplift the role of the philanthropic sector in civil society, emphasize the importance of cross sector collaboration, and advocate on issues our organizations care about. We named multiracial democracy, climate and disaster resilience, nonprofit sustainability, and racial and economic equity as overarching priorities. We advocated for statewide investments in affordable housing, homelessness services and prevention, healthcare access, climate resilience, and social safety net programs to be funded in the state budget, especially in light of anticipated federal funding cuts. 🗣🗳️🦺🏘️🏥 I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to co-organize and participate in this program, and I’m excited to continue building out NCG’s policy advocacy strategies in the coming months. Philanthropy has a critical role to play as stakeholders and allies to our movement partners leading the way for systemic change in California and throughout our country. We’ll only be able to withstand the challenges facing our communities by standing together in alignment with our shared values of achieving an equitable, inclusive, multiracial democracy where all communities have the resources needed to thrive. ✊⚖️🤝 Please reach out if you want to learn more or get involved in NCG’s democracy, policy, and movement work! #philanthropy #california #advocacy #democracy #ncg cc: Northern California Grantmakers SoCal Grantmakers Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties Akonadi Foundation The California Endowment The James B. This week, our team at #PhilanthropyCA leaned into our role as connectors, bringing philanthropic leaders together with state legislators, agencies, and the Governor's Office to strategize around how our sectors can work together to address drastic federal changes in service of vulnerable communities and building #resilience. This moment calls for deepening public/private partnerships and doubling down on coordination between sectors that creates the funding and policy environment for communities to both succeed in #fixing while maintaining momentum on #building toward a more just and equitable future. 1. California's #ClimateBond creates opportunity for co-development to ensure equitable funding distribution, community and workforce benefits, and establishing a robust pipeline of community and tribally-led projects. 2. If we collectively fail to equip communities with the resources to build for the long term during challenging political headwinds, we run the risk of worsening economic and social disparities down the road. 3. My colleague Katie Oran puts it best: Philanthropy and the State cannot make up the gap that cuts to federal funding will cause. Philanthropy must coalesce around key priorities and fund federal advocacy and legal efforts to ensure dollars owed to California communities, reach California communities. Spent the last couple days in Sacramento with Philanthropy California convening funders with state legislators, agency staff, and the Governor's Office to unpack what the rapid changes at the federal level mean for California nonprofits and communities dedicated to building climate resilience, among other priorities. Some of my key takeaways: 1. Now is not the time for retrenchment, communities need flexible investment to build partnerships, capacity, and protections that allow them to continue their work 2. There is an urgency to deepen cross-sector partnerships and information sharing on potential impacts, as well as the collective protective actions that will be required 3. Philanthropy and the State cannot make up the gap that cuts to federal funding will cause. Philanthropy must coalesce around key priorities and fund federal advocacy and legal efforts to ensure dollars owed to California communities, reach California communities. 👋🏼 Hello from day one of Philanthropy California’s Sacramento Advocacy Day! The Northern California Grantmakers team joined our colleagues at SoCal Grantmakers and Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties, together with 20+ of our members, for the first day of advocacy activities at the State Capitol. We started the day with a panel conversation highlighting the state of public affairs in Sacramento, then heard from Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency Secretary Tomiquia Moss about the importance of public-private partnerships. Our delegation split up in the afternoon to attend dozens of legislative and agency visits where our members had the opportunity to meet with their district representatives, share about their regional priorities, and offer themselves as resources and partners for future collaboration. We even got a surprise from Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Kim Johnson! What keeps coming up in our conversations is how critical the nonprofit sector is in our state, and specifically grassroots community-based organizations, who are the trusted messengers on endless issues in their communities. It’s clear that many of the state leaders we met with are aligned with our members on ensuring CBOs have the capacity and sustainability to serve their communities, not just in a crisis, but for the long-term. We look forward to continuing the conversations and following up on opportunities for partnership. On to day two!
