About us
In 1991, California's environmental authority was unified in a single Cabinet level agency—the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). Our mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality. We fulfill our mission by developing, implementing and enforcing the state's environmental protection laws that regulate clean air, clean water, clean soil, safe pesticides and waste recycling and reduction. Our departments are at the forefront of environmental science, using cutting-edge research to shape the state's environmental laws. The Office of the Secretary heads CalEPA and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of one office, two boards, and three departments dedicated to improving California’s environment: Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Air Resources Board State Water Resources Control Board Department of Pesticide Regulation Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery Department of Toxic Substances Control

We're celebrating World Water Day - a day all about the importance of freshwater! As part of its celebration of #WorldWaterDay, University of California, Berkeley invited State Water Board Chair E. Joaquin Esquivel to take part in a panel for its conference, Addressing Water Challenges of a Changing Climate. The panel, "Putting Research in Action," focused on how to integrate university research into state and local policy to help shape a brighter future. Chair Esquivel underscored the growing need for engineers, public policy students and climatologists who intimately understand climate change challenges. DYK? The State and Regional Water Boards have regulatory responsibility for protecting the water quality of nearly 1.6 million acres of lakes, 1.3 million acres of bays and estuaries, 211,000 miles of rivers and streams, and about 1,100 miles of California coastline. By now you’ve probably seen the slick ads trying to convince you that CARB should turn back the wheels of progress on our vehicle standards as the global market continues to roll forward toward a zero-emission future. It’s no surprise the industry is taking advantage of the political situation to create an artificial crisis that misleads consumers and undermines our work. The latest campaign is propagating a doomsday scenario based on the false narrative that manufacturers will not take advantage of flexibility available to them and will make extreme business decisions to stop selling or drastically reduce numbers of new cars for sale — in the largest market in the country. For over five decades California has worked closely with the auto industry to ensure that all new vehicle standards are feasible, cost-effective and will not result in market disruptions, especially with the introduction of ZEVs, which began over 30 years ago. We remain committed to continuing to work closely with manufacturers to ensure the success of the program and we will extend flexibility to individual companies as needed.
