Congratulations to Harvard University and the incredible project team! We are thrilled to provide structural engineering services for this transformative facility that redefines the future of theater design in higher education—with mass timber and sustainability at its core.
A major milestone has been reached in the construction of the #ShawmutBuilt new home for the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University with the start of mass timber installation—a technically complex phase that brings the project’s sustainable and regenerative design to life. Designed in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins, ARC/ Architectural Resources Cambridge, and Charcoalblue, this state-of-the-art facility is set to be one of the most innovative theater spaces in the world. Crafted for adaptability and openness, it will support a new era of artistic expression. The first mass timber truss—measuring over 70 feet long, 10 feet high, and nearly 30,000 pounds—was delivered in a single piece from Canada by Nordic Structures. It is one of many timber elements now taking shape on-site, including large columns weighing over 10,000 pounds each. Guided by principles of sustainability, flexibility, and community, the A.R.T.’s new home is designed to achieve the Living Building Challenge core accreditation as a pioneering model for sustainable cultural architecture.
