Masterplan for St Botolph’s Quarter in Colchester. Haworth Tompkins is working closely with Colchester City Council and LCR Property on a masterplan for St Botolph’s Quarter in Colchester, including a new piece of LUF-funded public realm centred around the ruins of the 11th century St Botolph’s Priory. The masterplan builds upon years of ongoing development within the area, to create a scheme which improves connectivity and access to Colchester’s heritage and supports the vibrant and diverse local neighbourhood. HT is leading a multi-disciplinary team, including landscape architects LDA Design and Colchester-based HAT Projects, working towards a planning application this year for the public realm, which forms the first phase of the wider masterplan. The scheme will create a new walking route directly from Colchester Town station, through a new public square into St Botolph’s Priory Gardens, and then on to Castle Park to the North. Architecture and Planning
We are a Stirling Prize-winning architectural studio with an international reputation for intelligent, purposeful design
About us
Haworth Tompkins was formed in 1991 by architects Graham Haworth and Steve Tompkins. Our London-based studio has designed buildings in the UK and elsewhere for clients across the public, private and subsidised sectors including schools, galleries, theatres, concert halls, housing, offices, shops and factories. Our buildings are influenced by the specific chemistry of individual places and cultural situations. We put enormous effort into understanding a building's context and the needs of its users, a process which often yields original or unconventional solutions. What they have in common is an approach rather than a stylistic signature. Professionalism and sustainability in the widest sense underpins our creative output. The combination of a relatively small, close-knit team and a carefully limited number of projects in development at any one time enables us to offer an exceptional level of service to our clients. Our work has won over 100 design awards including the 2014 Stirling Prize for the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram @haworthtompkins

A fantastic piece in The Times last week celebrating the restoration and reinvention of the Battersea Arts Centre after the 2015 fire. We are incredibly privileged to have been part of the project and played a part in the continued success of the centre. https://lnkd.in/eWx-ERXK #HaworthTompkins #BAC #GrandHall #10Years #Community #Cultural #Heritage #Asset #Restoration

Last week we welcomed young people from Beyond The Box CIC to our studio for a full-day architectural workshop to develop their designs for this year's People's Pavilion. The morning session began with a presentation by Architect Nicholas Royce, who introduced our work on the Battersea Arts Centre. He shared insights into the innovative ‘scratch’ design process and shared the practice’s creative response to the 2015 fire that partially destroyed the centre’s Grand Hall. Nick selected this project to illustrate the power of collaborative design and to highlight how unexpected challenges can inspire exceptional architectural outcomes. The presentation was followed by a tour of the studio. In the afternoon, Cor Creative led a hands-on design session focused on developing the group’s pavilion project to be installed at William Morris Gallery. The workshop explored key themes such as the circular economy, re-use, low-carbon construction, material honesty, and storytelling in design. Throughout the session, several members of the HT team joined to offer feedback, share professional insights, and answer questions about working in architecture. The day proved to be a valuable and inspiring experience, enabling the young participants to refine their designs and gain a deeper understanding of the architectural profession. It was also a wonderful opportunity to connect with emerging talent and bring their creative energy into the heart of the practice. #haworthTompkins #BeyondtheBox #PeoplesPavilion2025 #Collaboration #architecture #design #innovation #nextgen

We are looking forward to hosting a visit by members of the University Design Forum at the The Warburg Institute, University of London tomorrow morning. The visit will include an introductory talk by Dan Tassell and Elizabeth Flower followed by building tours that will provide the opportunity to view the existing and historical fabric alongside the new and enhanced spaces including a purpose-built lecture theatre, public gallery space, improved teaching spaces and new storage and study areas for the Library, Archives and Special Collections. In September 2024 we completed a significant refurbishment project to coincide with the re-birth of the Warburg Institute, to open its hidden collections up to new audiences and facilitate a more public-facing programme. https://lnkd.in/dBu2bsZQ #HaworthTompkins #WarburgInstitue #UDF #Education #Culture #rebirth #renovation #tour #visit
The Warburg Institute visit is next week and is full. For those that were lucky enough to get a place, make sure you share your experience with us. The mass timber installation is underway for the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, marking a major milestone which brings to life the project's sustainable and regenerative design principles. Designed in close collaboration with ARC/ Architectural Resources Cambridge, Shawmut Design and Construction, and Charcoalblue, the Center for Creativity & Performance will be a place for public gathering, international research, teaching, and groundbreaking theatrical production. A major milestone has been reached in the construction of the #ShawmutBuilt new home for the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University with the start of mass timber installation—a technically complex phase that brings the project’s sustainable and regenerative design to life. Designed in collaboration with Haworth Tompkins, ARC/ Architectural Resources Cambridge, and Charcoalblue, this state-of-the-art facility is set to be one of the most innovative theater spaces in the world. Crafted for adaptability and openness, it will support a new era of artistic expression. The first mass timber truss—measuring over 70 feet long, 10 feet high, and nearly 30,000 pounds—was delivered in a single piece from Canada by Nordic Structures. It is one of many timber elements now taking shape on-site, including large columns weighing over 10,000 pounds each. Guided by principles of sustainability, flexibility, and community, the A.R.T.’s new home is designed to achieve the Living Building Challenge core accreditation as a pioneering model for sustainable cultural architecture. Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming John Ellis and a group of students from the University of California, Berkeley Master of Real Estate Development + Design (MRED+D) course into the studio. During their visit to the UK, the group visited several key housing projects across London, exploring comparisons with projects and policies from America. HT Director Joanna Sutherland presented a case study on The Silchester Estate, completed by HT for Peabody in 2016 and well regarded as an exemplary case study in urban regeneration and Social Housing. The project creates a new urban block and integrates an existing 20-storey residential block with an enclosed shared garden, new high-quality family homes, retail and community facilities. 📸 Philip Vile, Fred Howarth #HaworthTompkins #Lecture #SocialHousing #UrbanRegeneration #SilchesterEstate
