HORN tool systems are used in numerous industries - including the medical industry. When milling precision tweezers, HORN's circular interpolation milling system performs three important processes: milling the hollow groove, milling the serrations of the tweezer tip and milling the handle pattern for flat-handled tweezers. HG-Micro-Instrumente GmbH & Co. KG from Wurmlingen near Tuttlingen also relies on this precision. The team led by Managing Director and Production Manager Christoph Götz are specialists in the medical industry and produce forceps, ear tweezers and other medical instruments. HORN is already testing artificial intelligence in its production. As a project partner of MetaLearn and TransKI, HORN is analysing the potential for optimisation in the area of tool and machine management. Both projects are funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The final presentation of both projects will take place on May 15th, 2025, as part of the HORN Technology Days. - MetaLearn uses artificial intelligence (AI) and data such as room temperatures, component dimensions or the condition of a machine to identify potential improvements in tool production. For example, AI is used to recommend the use of a specific tool grinding machine in order to minimize set-up times and achieve the required quality. - TransKI relies on the use of transfer learning. The AI uses the knowledge from previously learned use cases, trains itself and transfers the results to other processes or machines in order to generate optimizations such as tool life predictions. DM70 and DM90 – HORN is expanding its new PCD milling programme with two new series. The focus is on high efficiency milling and surface quality as well as burr-free milling. The DM70 series enables high efficiency milling and good surface quality when using small diameter tools and guarantees axial run-out to within microns thanks to the precise face and taper contact interface. The simple and quick replacement of the PCD-tipped milling cutter onto a carbide body is suitable for lean production processes and automated production systems. The DM90 series is specially designed for high performance requirements. It is available with long or short flutes in diameters from 50 mm (1.968“) to 125 mm (4.921“). Boring, profile turning, internal grooving - The Supermini tool system can be adapted and used for numerous machining operations. For the INTEC 2025 trade fair, HORN is rounding off the tool family with two additional sizes. For internal boring, the inserts are now available for diameters from 4 mm, 5 mm and 6 mm. The cutting edge geometry extends far into the corner radius of the insert. The 229 grooving system is one of more than 25,000 HORN standard items. System 229 has multiple holders offering different capabilities. In order to provide the user with enhanced versatility, HORN has combined the properties of various holders. The new tool holder for the system 229 has two connections for coolant transfer, either via a threaded port on the side of the holder or directly to the insert contact surface.
