We’re thrilled to announce that Captura has officially begun operations at our newest Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) pilot plant at NELHA's Hawai’i Ocean Science & Technology Park in Kona! Developed in partnership with Equinor, this facility is capable of capturing 1,000 tons of CO₂ annually and marks a significant step toward large-scale deployment of DOC technology. As the third and final pilot in our technology development program, this facility readies Captura’s technology for deployment in large, commercial systems worldwide. Initial design work is already underway for our first commercial facility, which is expected to capture tens of thousands of tons of CO₂ annually. Captura’s CEO Steve Oldham sums it up best: “Captura’s journey from lab-scale testing to our third technology demonstration in just three years is a testament to the scalability of our solution. This facility in Hawaii is the last milestone before we move to widespread commercial deployment of DOC technology. Its rapid installation and commissioning in just over two months demonstrates how our simple, modular design is ready to be scaled quickly to help address the urgent climate and energy challenge.” A huge shoutout to our amazing team and partners for their relentless efforts in making this project a reality! Harnessing the power of the ocean to heal the climate.
About us
The ocean is an immensely powerful force of nature, and our greatest ally to reverse the tides on climate change. By studying the planet’s natural cycles, Captura designed a solution that removes CO2 from the ocean and harnesses its ability to heal the climate—a process known as Direct Ocean Capture. Developed and proven in Caltech’s laboratories, our unique Direct Ocean Capture technology runs with just two ingredients: seawater and renewable electricity. It extracts CO2 directly from seawater to be permanently stored or reused. This amplifies the natural equilibrium between the ocean and atmosphere, drawing carbon out of the air and into the ocean to rebalance. Captura’s approach requires no rare-Earth minerals, adds nothing to the ocean, and leaves no chemicals behind. It’s a low-cost, large-scale carbon removal solution that is environmentally sound.

What’s the greatest, existing carbon removal device on the planet? The ocean. At Captura, we’re harnessing the ocean’s natural ability to remove atmospheric CO₂ through #DirectOceanCapture technology. Our process produces no waste, adds nothing to the ocean, and has the potential to deliver climate-relevant scales of carbon removal—while prioritizing the health of marine ecosystems. We’re proud to be one of four ocean-based carbon removal companies in the final round of the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval Competition – learn about all four companies in this great debut episode of XPRIZE's new docuseries.
The ocean naturally absorbs a third of global CO2 emissions—but what if we could enhance this ability while restoring marine ecosystems? We’re thrilled to share the first episode of our XPRIZE Carbon Removal docuseries, which documents our time in the field with the finalist teams observing their innovations at work. This episode follows four of the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval finalist teams who are pioneering marine carbon removal solutions–from harnessing biological systems to leveraging ocean chemistry and utilizing electrochemical processes. These innovations have the potential to cut carbon at scale, reduce ocean acidification, and protect marine life. The finalist teams focusing on ocean-based carbon removal are: 🌊 Captura: Captura provides a scalable, low-cost direct ocean capture (DOC) carbon removal solution, producing a measurable stream of CO2 for sequestration, using only seawater and renewable energy, with no other external additives or by-products. 🌊 Ebb Carbon: Ebb creates alkalinity from the seawater using an electrochemical process called electrodialysis. 🌊 Kelp Blue: Kelp Blue’s process leverages photosynthesis. Marine plants, like kelp, can absorb CO2, locking carbon away in the surrounding sediments and the deep ocean for thousands of years. 🌊 Planetary: Planetary enhances the ocean’s natural ability to fight climate change through ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE). Learn more about Captura, Ebb, Kelp Blue, and Planetary’s impactful work to help fight climate change in this episode. https://bit.ly/4kWQ08l

Captura is proud to announce our first large-volume sale of carbon removal credits and a new strategic partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL). MOL has purchased 30,000 tons of carbon removal credits from one of Captura’s first commercial #DirectOceanCapture (DOC) facilities, supporting their 2050 #NetZero goals. But that’s not all—MOL has also joined us as a strategic partner interested in deploying commercial DOC plants and has invested in Captura through its venture capital arm, MOL Switch LLC. This partnership builds on the rapid momentum of our technology development program: from our 1-ton and 100-ton pilots in California to our latest pilot in Hawaii, which is now operating at the rate of 1000 tons of CO2 captured annually. With these successful operations, we’ve validated the readiness of our technology for large-scale deployment and are now actively securing offtake agreements for commercial facilities. We’re excited to collaborate with MOL—through both this first offtake agreement and our new strategic partnership aimed at deploying DOC at scale. 🔗 Read the full news release here: https://lnkd.in/gygcQi7H #carbonremoval #partnership #carboncredits Pictured: Captura CEO Steve Oldham and MOL General Manager of Carbon Removal Team Yoshikazu Hirose in front of Captura’s 1000-ton-per-year DOC pilot plant in Hawaii.
