  • April 3rd is World Aquatic Animal Day! Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is committed to protecting the marine environment and ecosystems that are essential to both our business operations and the global community. Recognizing the impact of our activities, we are dedicated to taking proactive measures to minimize this impact and promote sustainability. Our approach prioritizes safe operations to prevent maritime incidents and includes strict adherence to environmental regulations, such as the proper management of ballast water during cargo handling. However, our efforts go beyond compliance. We voluntarily pursue additional initiatives aimed at reducing negative environmental effects, particularly in areas like underwater noise pollution. Research has shown that noise generated by ships can disrupt marine life, including species such as whales and dolphins. To address this, MOL has developed and implemented technologies like the Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCFs), an energy-saving device created by our group company, MOL Techno-Trade. Experiments have demonstrated that PBCFs help reduce underwater noise by eliminating hub vortices. Their effectiveness has been recognized internationally, with ports like Vancouver and Prince Rupert in Canada including them in their environmental programs to protect marine habitats. MOL Group remains committed to driving innovation and sustainability in shipping, ensuring that marine life and ecosystems are safeguarded for future generations. On this World Aquatic Animal Day, we reflect on our responsibility and our ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. • 【Daibiru Acquires Well-Located A-Grade Building in Sydney CBD 】 We are excited to announce that our group company, Daibiru Corporation has executed an agreement through its local subsidiary, Daibiru Australia Pty Ltd, with Investa Commercial Property Fund, managed by Investa, a leading Australian real estate company, to acquire 100% ownership of the A-grade office and commercial building "135 King Street" located in the Sydney CBD (Central Business District), Australia. 135 King Street (hereafter referred to as "the Property") is located in the Sydney CBD, an area with numerous office buildings. It faces Pitt Street Mall, one of the largest shopping streets in the Southern Hemisphere, and it is surrounded by luxury brand stores and large commercial facilities. This environment has established the Property as a top-tier corporate and retail destination. The Property is currently leased to numerous companies, government agencies, and a renowned fashion brand, maintaining high occupancy rates. • 【Fostering Collaboration and Sustainability】 - MOL in Mauritius ④ In the wake of the WAKASHIO incident, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has focused on fostering long-term sustainability and recovery in Mauritius. Beyond funding projects, MOL has been facilitating connections among experts from different fields, sparking a fusion of knowledge, and creating opportunities for new projects to emerge. “Before we came here, I heard that it was very rare for groups working on mangrove conservation to share information with groups focused on coral reef conservation. This is because for organizations that rely on donations and funds, groups working in related areas were often seen as competitors. However, when the absolute goal is environmental conservation of coastal ecosystems as in this case, everything is connected- mountains, rivers, and the sea- so vertical collaboration is crucial. We saw great value in having them engage in discussions together,” says Kazuhiko Sugano, the representative of the local subsidiary MOL (Mauritius) Ltd. With this in mind, we began regularly holding workshops and report meetings to bring together the members of the NGOs we support. Gradually, interactions became more active, and collaborations that created new value started to emerge in various places. “This position as an ‘organizer’ wasn’t something we initially planned. Rather, it naturally became part of our role as we reflected on what we should be doing and continued our activities here. Recently, we have had more and more opportunities to be asked to play such a role by the local people, and we are very happy about that,” Sugano reflects. In 2022, there was a Mauritius Cruise experience on the cruise ship NIPPON MARU, with optional tours that gained significant attention locally. Kanako Ota from the Environment & Sustainability Strategy Division said, “This time, the schedule included a relatively long four-day stay in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. During the docking period, passengers were offered a variety of experiences such as sightseeing tours and visiting NGO-operated facilities. The visits to social welfare facilities were very well-received, showcasing the high level of awareness among cruise ship guests toward social contribution activities. Mauritius is a place where you can feel the beautiful nature up close, with its turquoise blue sea and rich mangrove forests. It’s far from Japan, but I hope more people in Japan come to appreciate the charm of Mauritius.” MOL’s journey in Mauritius highlights the power of collaboration and the importance of taking on roles that go beyond expectations. By connecting experts, fostering partnerships, and supporting sustainable initiatives, MOL continues to play a vital part in the recovery and growth of Mauritius, paving the way for a brighter and more resilient future.
