About us
Ocean Visions was created to develop and advance solutions to protect and restore the ocean. We focus on the biggest driver of dangerous change – the climate disruption that is increasing ocean temperatures and levels of acidification. We mobilize a diverse network of collaborators and leverage cutting-edge science and innovative technologies to build ocean-based solutions that reduce climate stressors and restore ocean ecosystems. In short, we work to stabilize the climate and regenerate ocean health.

Where cutting-edge ocean science meets climate action, you’ll find David Koweek, PhD. In our Modern Planeteer series, we highlight individuals making meaningful contributions to climate solutions. A couple of years ago, we featured David, Chief Scientist at Ocean Visions, who is leading the charge in ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR). With a Ph.D. in Earth System Science from Stanford and past work with ClimateWorks Foundation, David combines deep scientific expertise with bold thinking. At Ocean Visions, he’s working to unlock the ocean’s potential to help reverse climate change all responsibly, transparently, and urgently. ”I am completely focused on accelerating R&D across all ocean-based carbon dioxide removal approaches.” This feature remains one of our all-time favorites and we continue to admire his work. Check out this Modern Planeteer feature of David and stay inspired by his trailblazing work. Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gcaM9Ksw

✨Collaboration Tool✨ Ocean Visions recently announced the Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) Ecosystem Database. mCDR offers a way to mitigate the climate crisis by harnessing the ocean’s ability to absorb and store carbon. This up-to-date, interactive database empowers the sector by giving users a way to engage and connect with the mCDR ecosystem, from funders to actors to activities. Episode 11 of the Plan Sea podcast is now live! Host Anna Madlener and special co-host Danny Gawlowski are back at the 2025 Ocean Visions Summit for a series of conversations on reducing emissions, repairing ecosystems, and reaching global communities — as it relates to advancing ocean-based climate solutions. In Part Two of Plan Sea’s coverage of the 2025 Ocean Visions Summit, the hosts are joined by Nikhil Neelakantan, Marianne Hagen, Kilaparti Ramakrishna, and David Koweek, PhD to discuss their work in the ocean-climate nexus. As part of our Senior Fellow Margaret Williams' ongoing Arctic Ocean study group, we were fortunate to host Kerry Nickols, Ph.D. of Ocean Visions and Rafe Pomerance of Woodwell Climate Research Center for a discussion on sea level rise and climate interventions in the Arctic, particularly the governance, feasibility, and ethical concerns surrounding #geoengineering. Greenland’s melting ice sheet is accelerating sea level rise. Research into ice management includes surface brightening, blocking/reducing ice export, and solar radiation modification (SRM), but there are numerous unknown unknowns. Nickols emphasized the urgency of discussing climate engineering solutions. A refusal to talk is a refusal to prepare, as absence of governance could fail to regulate unintended human and environmental impacts of experimentation or deployment, particularly by non-state actors. Students and speakers also discussed the importance of framing geoengineering not as a substitute for emissions reduction but only a complement. Numerous field experiments are underway across the world, highlighting the urgency of governance and community-buy in. 🌊 Aligning for Ocean-Climate Solutions 🌊 The SCALE MRV Joint Innovation Project aligns with the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) research program. #SCALE #MRV is a pioneering initiative to advance scalable monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) solutions for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). TCA is one of the most intensive investigations ever undertaken into the ocean's role in climate change that OFI administers under leadership by Dalhousie University. Both initiatives focus on the critical intersection of oceans, climate, and people, contributing valuable data to CIOOS Atlantic, enhancing the impact of our research, and driving forward innovative solutions for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). In this way we will advance ocean-based climate solutions that support global net-zero goals and a sustainable future. 🌍 Learn more: https://ow.ly/YLcR50VrGJh Project Lead: Eric Siegel Research Principal Investigator: Christopher Whidden With the invaluable expertise and contributions of our partners: atdepth Nortek Open Ocean Robotics Pro-Oceanus Systems RBR Oceankind To learn more about CIOOS: https://cioos.ca

Our new #mCDR COMPASS initiative aligns with the Transforming Climate Action (TCA) program, one of the most intensive investigations into the ocean's role in climate change. TCA focuses on the nexus between oceans, climate, and people. Similarly, mCDR COMPASS aims to advance responsible and equitable #ocean-climate solutions, collaborating with stakeholders to achieve long-term climate goals, conserve ocean health, and support communities, policies, and industries. Together, mCDR COMPASS and the TCA research program are poised to make a meaningful impact on our climate. 🌏 Read more: https://ow.ly/5WzK50VvPMj Dalhousie University, Carbon Removal Canada, Canada's Ocean Supercluster #TransformingClimateAction #Sustainability #Innovation

Wildfires, droughts, heatwaves, food insecurity, and resulting migration, and climate-related conflict threaten people around the world each day. Seas are rising, warming, acidifying, and losing oxygen—all of which threaten the health and structure of marine ecosystems and the communities around the world that rely on them. While still in its infancy, macroalgal cultivation technology has attracted serious attention and early-stage investment. Together with MBARI, Ocean Visions convened a working group consisting of members across academia, government, and industry to improve the understanding of the effectiveness and consequences of sinking seaweed to the deep ocean for long-term carbon sequestration.
