It’s always a thrill to watch #hydrogeninnovation in action! Yesterday the CRH2 team took a field trip to see the refuelling process for CPKC’s hydrogen locomotives, and to learn more about the technology and plans behind this ongoing initiative. Hydrogen fuel cell locomotives aren’t just a hypothetical. First announced in 2020, CPKC is currently putting North America’s first hydrogen-fuelled freight locomotives through the paces, testing performance in a range of conditions and use cases. The Calgary-based team showed us the refuelling process (with hydrogen produced on-site with their own solar array), gave us a tour of the retrofitted engines, and indulged our nerdiest questions on how it all works. Learn more about CPKC’s groundbreaking Hydrogen Locomotive Program here—and thanks again for the tour! https://lnkd.in/eXcXVfmV #hydrogeninnovation #hydrogenfuel #hydrogeneconomy #calgary #locomotives #hydrogentransport

Where can hydrogen make the biggest impact? What are the key challenges in building a hydrogen economy? And how do hydrogen hubs help develop a thriving domestic hydrogen market? The Transition Accelerator's David B Layzell joined Atlantic Hydrogen Alliance's Hydrogen Journey podcast to discuss hydrogen's potential role in Atlantic Canada—with valuable insights for anyone thinking about our future energy system.
Our new pod is out! Listen to the latest episode of the Atlantic Canada's Hydrogen Journey podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts, Or, listen here: https://lnkd.in/eAaYgAVW In this episode Derek Estabrook talked to David B Layzell from The Transition Accelerator/ L’Accélérateur de transition and Sandy Schembri from NorthStar Public Affairs to explore using low-carbon hydrogen here in Atlantic Canada. Sandy, Dave, and Derek talked about building a "coalition of the willing" to develop the domestic hydrogen sector from the ground up, overcoming skepticism, and how hydrogen hubs can help address the 'chicken-and-egg dilemma'. What is a hydrogen hub, anyway? Developing a sustainable hydrogen economy means building a whole new value chain, and that takes coordination. Alberta’s hydrogen producers need to be able to collaborate with the businesses and end users that will drive demand—and the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub is here to act as the connective glue within the hydrogen ecosystem. What does that mean in practice? It means we’ll be working with experts from across this new value chain to uncover opportunities, and conducting analysis to fill in knowledge gaps and help overcome real-world barriers to hydrogen development. Our emphasis is on collaboration and knowledge sharing, which is why the Hub’s insights and analysis will be publicly available to benefit all Canadians, and it’s why we’ll put an emphasis on events like webinars and in-person networking opportunities to help connect the dots within the community.

Friday was a significant day for Alberta's hydrogen ecosystem. The same morning we announced the launch of the Calgary Region Hydrogen Hub, the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB started the next chapter in its mission. Collaboration and cooperation are essential to building on Alberta’s strong foundations in the hydrogen economy. The Calgary and Edmonton regions each have their unique strengths, opportunities, and challenges, but we share a vision of a thriving future for our province and for all of Canada in a world moving to reduce its emissions, and we look forward to discovering ways to bring that vision to life.
Today, the Edmonton region’s hydrogen ecosystem came together to celebrate a new phase for the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB. This relaunch marks a shift toward deeper collaboration, focused execution, and regional leadership in building a low-carbon economy. At the heart of this new chapter is a renewed governance structure and a dedicated group of funding partners: Alberta's Industrial Heartland Association, Edmonton Global, Edmonton International Airport (YEG), and Alberta Innovates. Together, these partners are driving collaboration across the region—aligning industry, government, and community to accelerate the growth of our hydrogen economy. With a strong leadership and history building the Edmonton region's hydrogen ecosystem, Brent Lakeman, Executive Director for the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB brings an assured vision for the future successes of our hydrogen economy. Thank you to the speakers who helped mark this important milestone: Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor of Sturgeon County and former Chair of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen HUB; the Honourable Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, Government of Alberta; Malcolm Bruce MSM, ICD.D, CEO of Edmonton Global; Myron Keehn, President and CEO of Edmonton International Airport (YEG); Bryan Helfenbaum, Associate Vice President, Clean Energy at Alberta Innovates; Jessica Lof, Development Manager, Hydrogen for Mobility, Air Products Canada Ltd.; Gregory Caldwell, Director of Policy and Advocacy at ATCO Energy Systems; and Rebecca Goldsack, Chair of Hydrogen Alberta and COO of Diesel Tech Industries. Your insights and leadership reflect the strength and momentum behind this work. A special thank you to Mayor Amarjeet Sohi and Mayor Simon Boersma for your attendance and continued support. This next phase is about building on the momentum of our hydrogen economy, working across sectors, connecting communities, and driving investment.
