AI continues to revolutionize the educational sector by making student data more accessible and actionable for schools, parents, and staff. GroupEd, a forward-thinking educational software company, is dedicated to creating a unified solution that serves parents, students, and teachers alike. Recently, they collaborated with Ahmed Abdellah from our Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub on an exciting project to develop a prototype chatbot. This chatbot is designed to accurately and efficiently answer questions about student grades and activities, providing users with instant access to key information. The collaboration not only delivered a working prototype but also explored advanced techniques to ensure data accuracy and reliability, helping GroupEd take a significant step toward realizing their vision. Sam Robson-Davis, Head of Systems Development at GroupEd, shared their enthusiasm for the project, stating: “Partnering with Hartree has shown us that our potential is far greater than we ever imagined.” If your SME is looking to harness AI to improve processes, unlock insights, or deliver innovative solutions, contact us at hartree@cardiff.ac.uk to see how we can help. Hartree Centre SME Hubs reposted this
Great day spent yesterday in the beautiful sunny boardroom of York St John University talking all things data with Hartree Centre SME Hubs, Steven Brewer and several other brilliant Northern SMEs for the ‘Innovating with Data Masterclass for SMEs’. Data is everywhere in recruitment, and especially when D,E&I is in focus. I know there’s so much opportunity to enhance The Talent Movement through the use of data and AI but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. I came away with a deeper appreciation and knowledge of the roles I recruit for, a list of brilliant tools and resources and a head full of ideas. A day well spent. 💡 📊 💡

Menna provides a chat-based financial assistant for SMEs allowing small business owners to make better financial decisions and run their businesses by combining AI with rich real-time data. Building on a previous successful collaboration with the company, our Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub recently completed a 2 month Project exploring the use of open weight large language models (LLMs) in a conversational financial assistant, providing comparison to proprietary solutions. David T. Tuxworth and Cai Davies implemented an AI system that handles user interactions differently depending on the resources needed, reducing cost. General queries such as “What does Menna offer?” are answered using a computationally efficient RAG-based system. Transactional queries such as “What is my balance?” are answered using ReACT, a more expensive process that simulates reasoning. The project allowed the company to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of open weight LLMs in comparison to cloud-based services. The company was also provided the tools to begin exploring novel prompting frameworks and vector databases to enhance their product. For guidance on how your SME can implement LLMs or other innovative technologies, contact us at hartree@cardiff.ac.uk.
