OCS hosted its People into Work forum in response to the Government’s Get Britain Working White Paper. 💼 The forum brought together partners, experts, and employers to explore how national businesses can strengthen pathways into employment, support diverse talent, and maximise social value across the UK & Ireland. 🌍 Focus areas included 👇 - Inclusive hiring for people with disabilities, health conditions, and diverse backgrounds - Youth employment, career awareness, and engagement - The upcoming Connect to Work programme and its implications for employers - Strengthening social value delivery through sustainable job creation - Discussion centred around how employers can support those furthest from the labour market, drive retention, and create long-term progression pathways. This week for #ThrowbackThursday, we're sharing the story of the ACS team at Gatwick Airport! 🛬 Cleaning up a Boeing 747 after a transatlantic flight might seem like a big task, but to the team who worked at Aircraft Cleaning Services Ltd. at Gatwick Airport in the 1980s, it was all in a day's work. Given reasonable conditions, the ACS team could turn around a wide-bodied 747 in 1 hour 15 minutes, while a narrow-bodied aircraft, such as the Super 737, could be cleaned in just 30 minutes! 🧼 It was estimated that from March 1982 through to April 1983, ACS personnel would have turned round 17,242 aircraft and transit-cleaned a further 1,030 while the passengers remained on board, for 71 major airlines including British Airways, Pan Am, Cathay Pacific, SAS, Delta and Air Florida. The ACS team was led by Managing Director Gil Waud and General Manager Mike Varrall, who directed four administrators, 17 supervisors and 100 permanent cleaning operatives. During the busy summer period, an extra 100 cleaning operatives were drafted in. ☀️ Through to current day, on our 125th anniversary, cleaning is just one of many of our specialist aviation services.
