We are delighted to announce that Martyn’s Law has successfully progressed through Parliament and has received Royal Assent. For the first time, it will be required that certain premises and events take steps to reduce the risk of harm to individuals arising from acts of terrorism. Thank you to Figen Murray OBE and her campaign team for their help in delivering the Bill. They walked from Manchester to London to raise awareness and co-hosted two roundtable discussions on how to strengthen the legislation. #SaferCommunities | #MartynsLaw | #Security
I'm incredibly pleased to see the progress of Martyn's Law through Parliament on Tuesday evening. The final stage of Royal Ascent is now only weeks away. I'd like to express my personal gratitude to Figen Murray OBE, who has truly helped in delivering an amazing Bill that will soon receive the King's signature despite facing adversity. Figen’s drive, together with the campaign team, has been outstanding, and the end result will benefit communities far and wide. We'll ensure that this becomes a lasting legacy and do all we can to support its implementation in the months and years to come. Businesses must play an important role in tackling terrorism, and Mitie has ensured, wherever possible, that our teams and customers have been briefed effectively on the key points throughout the journey of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill. Following the Manchester Arena inquiry, our view has been to implement additional training for our frontline teams covering the key learnings from the inquiry to support and complement the existing ACT Awareness and SCaN for all training they already received. Additionally, I'm proud of Barrie Millett and our colleagues at Mitie for the support they have given Figen. Their dedication, along with the efforts of my industry peers and the campaign team, has been remarkable. Figen and her campaign team took part in an incredible walk from Manchester to London to raise awareness and Barrie and our Mitie colleagues joined them for part of the journey. Later they also co-hosted two roundtable discussions on how the legislation could be strengthened from the perspective of the security industry. The first discussion took place in the House of Commons and was hosted by Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark. We are pleased to announce that Martyn’s Law has completed its passage through Parliament to receive Royal Assent. The Act will enhance public safety and national security by requiring those responsible for publicly accessible venues and locations to take steps to improve protective security and preparedness. There is a 24-month implementation period for venues to prepare and for the Government to provide guidance. There is also free online training that can be taken by anyone in an organisation now as a first step. All of us as a society can play a role in recognising potential threats and mitigating the impact of a terror attack. As ever we are incredibly grateful to Figen Murray OBE who has overcome hurdles and demonstrated immense strength to reach this milestone so other families will not suffer in the way she has. Martyn’s Law not only impacts the security industry but is a change that will impact every venue, event, and community in the UK. We're committed to making sure that this becomes a legacy and will do all we can to support Martyn’s Law in action in the months and years to come. The initiative aims to support local, unemployed individuals by equipping them with crucial first aid skills. Another certificate to add to the folder. 📂 The Emergency First Aid at Work Qualification has helped me to understand what to do in an emergency situation. The training was very in depth, comprising of a PowerPoint presentation and interactive demonstrations. 🩹 Thanks to all the team at Mitie, Gareth Cavanagh at Cumbria CVS (Council for Voluntary Service) and Rachel Edmondson during your time with All Together Cumbria for the organisation and my referral to take part in this training course.
