Our mission is to advance sustainable hydropower, building knowledge on its role in energy, water & climate solutions.
About us
Our mission is to advance sustainable hydropower by building and sharing knowledge on its role in renewable energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate change solutions. The world is facing a water and energy crisis. Around the globe, 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean water, while 1.2 billion live without access to electricity. The dominance of fossil fuels in the global energy supply drives climate change, exacerbating these problems. With the global demand for energy expected to increase by up to 61 per cent by 2050, the world must look towards a sustainable, renewable mix of energy sources. Hydropower, the world’s largest source of renewable electricity, has an increasingly important role to play as part of a mixed energy portfolio in adapting to climate change. Development is challenging on many fronts. While the way forward for hydropower must be economically and technically robust, its footprint must be one that respects the environment and makes people’s lives better. Our vision is a world where water and energy services are delivered to all in a sustainable way.

2024 saw the largest increase in renewable energy capacity to date – with the addition of 585 gigawatts (GW) of renewables as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). By this calculation, renewables accounted for 46% of global installed power capacity. This report shares that renewables accounted for a record 92.5% of global power additions, largely due to significant growth in solar and wind power. ☀️ 🌬️ With the increase of global solar and wind development, the world needs reliable and secure energy storage. Pumped storage hydropower is an established solution to this energy storage challenge. 💧 🔋 At the International Forum on Pumped Storage, global leaders will come together to advance this proven technology. The application window is now open for projects seeking to benefit from the UK Government and Ofgem’s new cap and floor scheme for LDES! ⚡ 🔹 What’s the opportunity? The cap and floor mechanism is designed to de-risk investment in LDES, ensuring a minimum revenue floor for developers while capping excessive returns. This helps manage the high capital costs and long build times of LDES projects—technologies that are crucial for a secure, low-carbon, and cost-effective energy future. This will support the UK's Clean Power 2030 goals. Government-backed studies suggest that widespread LDES deployment could save up to £24 billion for the energy system and consumers by 2050. By establishing this first-of-its-kind cap and floor regime, the UK is positioning itself as a global leader in clean energy innovation. Key dates: ✅ Application window opened: 8 April 2025 📆 Submission deadline: 9 June 2025 📆 First project approvals expected: Q2 2026 This is a transformational moment for LDES in the UK. ➡️ Learn more and apply: https://lnkd.in/eUFUcfv8 ➡️ Interested in being part of the movement to encourage more pumped storage hydropower development? Dr. K. M. Abraham CFA, Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Kerala welcomed the IHA delegation in India to his office yesterday in Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala’s plans for pumped storage (PSH) development and policy frameworks were discussed with the IHA; as the state looks to bolster its PSH capacity to provide storage for its renewable energy catalogue. The delegation also met with the Government of Kerala’s Additional Chief Secretary Shri K.R. Jyothilal (IAS). According to the Energy Management Centre (EMC) Kerala, exploration is currently ongoing for up to 4,590+ MW of PSH capacity in the state. Two projects have been selected so far, following the findings of the pre-feasibility report. PSH complements wind and solar by storing the excess electricity they create and providing the backup for when the wind isn’t blowing, and the sun isn’t shining. It is crucial, not just for India’s energy security but the entire world and that is why world leaders are coming together in September for the International Forum on Pumped Storage.
