[PROJECT] SUSU RCC DAM – MALAYSIA Susu Dam, located in the Pahang region of Malaysia, is a remarkable example of integrated engineering applied to hydropower infrastructure. With a height of 90 meters and a crest length of over 500 meters, the dam is part of the Ulu Jelai Hydropower Project, developed for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia's national electricity utility. The Ulu Jelai Hydropower Plant has an installed capacity of 382 MW, generating on average 374 GWh of renewable electricity per year. All the energy produced is supplied to the National Grid of Peninsular Malaysia, contributing to the country's energy transition and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The upstream face waterproofing incorporated a Carpi Tech patented exposed PVC geomembrane system, covering a total area of 27,510 m². 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐄 To waterproof a vertical upstream face RCC dam, in a tropical environment, within a tight schedule, while ensuring long-term durability. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐏𝐈 𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 Design, supply and installation of a patented exposed waterproofing system using: ➡️ SIBELON® CNT 4400 geocomposite: 3 mm PVC geomembrane heat-bonded to a 500 g/m² polypropylene geotextile ➡️ Stainless steel patented face anchorage system, tensioned every 5.7 m ➡️ Total area waterproofed : 27,510 m² ➡️ Integrated drainage system with 10 independent drainage compartments ➡️ Special joint seals connecting to internal waterstops   Why the Carpi Tech System made the difference at Susu Dam? 1. 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐂𝐂 𝐦𝐢𝐱 → Thanks to the guaranteed impermeability of the upstream face, the RCC mix design was optimised and the cementitious content was reduced from the initially planned 100 kg/m³ of cement and 80 kg/m³ of fly ash to 95 kg/m³ of B2 type cement and no fly ash. 2. 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞 → The installation of the waterproofing system (27,510 m²) was completed in just 6 months, from June 2015 to January 2016, despite the complexity of working on a vertical upstream face. 3. 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞 → The system has provided continuous good performance since completion, with no claims, no disputes, and no reported leakage issues, to date. 4. 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 → The exposed geomembrane system ensures easy access for inspections, monitoring, and possible local repairs, without complex interventions or structural works, and even underwater.
