Fantastic news from the Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture and a huge milestone in the construction of HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd, with the tunnel boring machine (TBM) Caroline having completed a five-mile tunnel drive under London. The 2,050-tonne TBM broke through overnight, having installed a total of 4,217 concrete tunnel rings! This milestone means the Northolt Tunnel, which will take high-speed trains from the outer edge of the capital at West Ruislip into the new Old Oak Common super-hub station in west London, is now 93% complete. TBM Caroline was launched in October 2022 with teams working around the clock since then to operate the machine and create the new tunnel shaft. She is the second machine to reach Green Park Way, following TBM Sushila which completed its drive earlier in the year. Congratulations to the project team! #TransformingPerfomance #Rail
Today our tunnel boring machine (TBM) Caroline, completed a 5-mile tunnel drive under London, reaching the Green Park Way vent shaft in Ealing. The machine is 1 of 4 giant tunnelling machines being deployed to build the railway’s Northolt Tunnel. The 2,050-tonne TBM broke through into an underground reception can filled with foam concrete, and installed the 4,217th concrete tunnel ring to complete the 5-mile stretch of tunnel. James Neve, our production thinking lead, recently spoke to New Civil Engineer about how Costain is applying standardisation principles and production thinking – our combination of modern methods of construction with new technologies and materials - to our #AMP8 projects in the #water sector. James discusses the growing prominence of modular #construction techniques, why customers, contractors and the supply chain all benefit from their application, and what barriers still need to be broken down to enable wider adoption across #infrastructure sectors. You can read James’s thoughts in the New Civil Engineer article here: https://bit.ly/4j8bUUz You can also learn more about production thinking and some of the projects where we have successfully applied the approach: https://bit.ly/4c2aSXU #SustainableInfrastructure #TransformingPerformance

We’re thrilled to announce that WSP in the UK & Ireland, in partnership with Mott MacDonald (MWJV), has been appointed to Network Rail’s £300m Northern Powerhouse Rail Development & Design Partnership Framework! 🚆 This transformative project will revolutionise rail travel across the North of England, connecting key economic hubs like Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, and York. As part of the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom’s Integrated Rail Plan, it’s a game-changer for regional connectivity, offering faster, greener, and more reliable journeys. 🌍✨ MWJV, supported by Costain Group PLC as its Strategic Construction Partner, will lead multidisciplinary design and advisory services. The first contract that will be awarded to one of the suppliers on the DDPF will focus on improvements to the York (Colton Junction) to Newcastle route. This is a pivotal step towards delivering a connected and thriving region. We’re proud to support this landmark programme, which has the potential to drive economic growth, enhance sustainability, and improve travel experiences for millions. #WeAreWSP #NorthernPowerhouseRail #SustainableTravel

It’s vital the UK takes the steps needed to deliver critical #infrastructure projects in a consistent, predictable and strategic way. That’s why our CEO, Alex Vaughan, has signed this letter in support of the Planning and Infrastructure Bill. #SustainableInfrastructure #TransformingPerformance
Today, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill receives its Second Reading in Parliament. MPs will decide whether to support the Bill's measures to accelerate and improve the delivery of critical infrastructure across the UK or keep the industry tied up in bureaucratic red tape. In an open letter published in The i, alongside the CEOs of 13 of the largest Tier One contractors and consultants, we called on MPs to support the Bill in its entirety. Robust debate is crucial, but we urge parliamentarians and Government to approach the Bill with the focus and urgency required to grasp the scale of this opportunity. This is about delivering a modern, world-class, and affordable infrastructure system. The stakes couldn't be higher. The UK cannot afford to wait. Now is the time for leadership and action. Together with our partners Transport for London, we’re starting refurbishment of the Gallows Corner Flyover. The flyover is a critical #road for the London economy, helping to drive prosperity, mobility and support economic growth. After creating a detailed design, we’re beginning the on-site works for this complex structure, which was built in the 1970s and requires significant refurbishment to continue operating safely. The project will allow the removal of current speed and weight restrictions, reduce local congestion and improve the resilience, reliability and quality of journeys on London’s road network.
