Reviving the mauri | life force and vitality of our ocean and coastal communities through regenerative ocean farming

About us

Greenwave Aotearoa is pioneering regenerative ocean farming in New Zealand, sharing our knowledge, skills and opportunities to create flourishing ecosystems and economies that will leave our waters brimming with abundance for future generations. Partnering with GreenWave in the United States to adapt its highly successful model for Aotearoa New Zealand, we’re focusing on establishing a viable, scalable native seaweed supply chain that can be a powerful force in combating climate change, boosting biodiversity and creating regional jobs. Using the native brown seaweed Ecklonia radiata as a fundamental crop, we’re working to create an end-to-end supply chain, optimise hatchery production and productivity of seaweed farming, and lay the foundation for exponential sector growth. In doing so, we seek to reduce the uncertainty around the productivity of seaweed farming operations and provide the proof of concept for farming native seaweed at scale in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our programme of work is led by impact investment project developers, EnviroStrat, in collaboration with a network of partners including Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki, Ngāti Pūkenga, Premium Seas, University of Waikato, University of Auckland, AgriSea and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

  • Thanks to business journalist Alka Prasad for picking up on the latest asset purchase by EnviroStrat, in our work to progress a scalable supply chain and drive product innovation in macroalgae and seaweed. As part of our goal to scale a vertically integrated seaweed supply chain in New Zealand, EnviroStrat acquired key intellectual property and physical assets (including the Aqua Curo system) from Quayside Holdings, marking a significant leap forward in macroalgae innovation. The newly acquired infrastructure - adapted for both marine and freshwater and for different algal species, can be used to remove excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient-rich discharges including freezing works, dairy factories, salmon hatcheries, and municipal wastewater treatment facilities. This acquisition is a strategic investment with significant synergies with the other impact ventures EnviroStrat has created over the last five years; in particular our Greenwave Aotearoa seaweed venture. #EnviroStrat #GreenwaveAotearoa #Seaweed #Aquaculture #Sustainability #Innovation #MarineScience Rebecca Barclay-Cameron Ryan Marchington Nigel Bradly Peter Randrup Alison Smith Stuff

  • We have thoroughly enjoyed having the wonderful Huna and Tyler in our team as interns with us at Greenwave Aotearoa, joining the EnviroStrat family to assist us in making impact with the support of Callaghan Innovation Innovation. Tyler and Huna have seriously rolled their sleeves up and not only learned a great deal but contributed so much. This little clip at the start of their journey captured the excitement of what lay ahead. We look forward to sharing more about the contributions they’ve made and continue to make in helping our ocean ecosystem.

  • Our team just wrapped up an insight-packed week at the Seagriculture Conference Asia-Pacific Conference in Adelaide — a gathering of innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and policy leaders shaping the future of seaweed.   One of our own, Ryan Marchington, spoke on the importance of kelp seed banks and seeding techniques to support resilient, regionally adapted seaweed aquaculture across Aotearoa. Among the fascinating visits we made was an introduction to Goolwa PipiCo and their inspiring story of how they turned around their business model by working in hand in hand with the Ngarrindjeri people to deliver more value while harvesting less.   Plenty of big ideas, bold collaborations, and fresh momentum in the space — we're excited for what’s next. #Seaweed #BlueEconomy #KelpFarming #Aquaculture #GreenwaveAotearoa #Seagriculture2025 #RegenerativeOceanFarming Rebecca Barclay-Cameron Peter Randrup

  • It was fantastic for our team to host Arctic Seaweed AS recently here in New Zealand, helping us in our mission to create a reliable and scalable supply chain for New Zealand seaweed. Greenwave Aotearoa’s philosophy is not just finding a new way to grow seaweed, but focusing a lens on an environmental problem that we can help solve, while creating economic opportunity. We are committed to unlocking the potential of a thriving seaweed sector - learning from international best practice and putting this into action here in New Zealand. Thanks to Kim and the team from Arctic Seaweed for the insights. More to come!

  • Let’s get quizzical on seaweed this summer in NZ 😎 As you dip in the ocean, consider that the Greenwave Aotearoa project is broadening the range of seaweed species being farmed, with three species that we're focused on in 2025. Fun fact warning 😁 Share your guess as to which seaweed species they are, based on our fun facts: Fun Fact #1: New Zealand’s coastal waters host some seriously “super” seaweeds and this incredible plant grows fast under optimal conditions. It's named for the air-filled bladders in its stems, which draw the seaweed up to the surface. Can you guess the species? Fun Fact #2: This seaweed is named after Christian Friedrich Ecklon in 1817. The name marked the Danish botanist, pharmacist and plant collector who was also an early explorer of the Cape of Good Hope. This is easy, surely no kelp is needed to guess? Fun Fact #3: This purple-hued alga is among those that produces natural gelling agents called carrageenans, widely used as thickeners and stabilisers in products from icecream to skincare. It’s purple, so it can’t be the species of seaweed named after the New Zealand Plant Protection Society journal editor Ruth Falshaw. Do you know what it is? Answer:1. Macrocystis pyrifera, also known as giant kelp. 2. Ecklonia radiata. 3. Gigartina atropupurea. Photo credit: Rimurapa/Alison Smith. • Welcoming Peter Randrup to the EnviroStrat team as our newly established role of Seaweed Innovation Lead for Greenwave Aotearoa 👏 Peter has been busy in recent weeks hatching seaweed babies - it's super exciting work and great news for the future commercialisation potential of seaweed in New Zealand, and for reef restoration. As the manager of the Sulphur Point hatchery for Greenwave Aotearoa, Peter was instrumental over the past 3+ years growing seaweed in hatcheries and in the ocean. He was awarded #1 Research Technician at the University of Waikato School of Science in 2023 for his work on Greenwave Aotearoa, was a finalist in the New Zealand Innovation Awards and is an Edmund Hillary Fellow. Beyond his professional pursuits, Peter is also the New Zealand Ceroc Dance Champion, though the EnviroStrat team is still waiting lessons! The Christmas lead-up has been a busy time for our Greenwave Aotearoa team, which has developed techniques to cultivate four species of native seaweed from broodstock, beyond the initial work on just the single species of Ecklonia radiata. Look out for it this summer if you're in New Zealand. It is a beautiful golden kelp and where it grows is where fauna thrive. You can learn more about Greenwave Aotearoa at our website www.greenwave.nz and happy holidays for those lucky enough to get a break!
