Training and supporting regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change.
About us
GreenWave trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change. We work with coastal communities throughout North America to create a blue green economy—built and led by ocean farmers—that ensures we all make a living on a living planet. As a nonprofit, GreenWave’s 10 year goal is to provide training, tools, and support to a baseline of 10,000 regenerative ocean farmers to catalyze the planting of 1 million acres and yield meaningful economic and climate impacts. To date, GreenWave has trained and supported more than 120 farmers and hatchery technicians throughout New England, California, New York, the Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. With over 5,000 people waitlisted for our services, GreenWave works with farmers to launch and scale their businesses through a mix of training and innovation. Our high-and-low touch training ranges from an online seed-to-sale Ocean Farming Toolkit and region-specific workshops to hands-on internships and participation in our farmer support network. Our innovation program works to scale markets in four shovel-ready sectors - food, agriculture, bioplastics and Blue Carbon - as well as disseminate the latest farm, hatchery and blue tech design throughout our farmer network.

Season Extension Using Kelp Seed Banks–Courses Now Available 🚨 • • • Two years after implementing new seed bank and nursery technologies that gave us greater flexibility over seed production timing, GreenWave continues to test the limits on outplanting. This fall, we set lines out on October 17, two weeks earlier than the previous year. Now, at the season’s midpoint, our kelp is thriving despite the early planting and low nutrient levels from drought conditions in southern Connecticut. By outplanting earlier, we’re working to extend the growing season and maximize biomass before summer temperatures set in. To learn more about these next-generation seed bank and nursery techniques, check out our two new courses, 🛠️ Building a Gametophyte Seed Bank and 🧵 Propagating Seedstring from Gametophytes, now available on the 🌊 Ocean Farming Hub! Join GreenWave and Hortimare for an in-depth look into the course during our launch webinar tomorrow, April 3. 🎟️ Register: https://ow.ly/rNQQ50VtpWF

Join the discussion on seaweed solutions, climate innovation, and regenerative ocean farming on April 8 at the Seaweed Solutions event at 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub! We’re thrilled to have our Senior Program Manager, Grace Collery, contributing her insights to the conversation. Thanks to Daphné Halley for bringing this event together. Details below! 👇
Cross over episode! Seaweed night at 9Zero Climate Innovation Hub on April 8th 🌊 🌍 ⚡ A few weeks ago, I was eating at our Food & Ag Sector lunch and overheard half of the table talking seaweed. Mike Blakeley (Seagreen Insights) and Grace Collery (GreenWave) were fielding questions from other 9Zero members about seaweed and its applications. We decided to organize a Seaweed Solutions event - covering its role in climate action, latest innovations and trends, and (my personal favorite) storytelling (throwback to #HopeintheWater!). The event wouldn't be complete without Jennifer Bushman and Dune Lankard, and I'm thrilled to say they will join Mike and Grace on the panel! I'm really excited to invite you to this event, where we'll watch a clip for Hope in the Water and hear from our four seaweed experts. You do not want to miss it! Come ask questions! Pirate Politics . . . I often get asked “What kind of folks become ocean farmers?” My answer: It’s a motley crew of contradictions. Flag-flying Trump supporters and climate activists. Social justice warriors and anti-government crusaders. Some are running 90-ft draggers, others farm from kayaks. There’s white collar, blue collar, and no collar. It’s a beautiful mess, and good to see so many shades of lived experience, hardships, viewpoints shipping out on a joint mission. The question is, what’s holding this merry band of pirates together? What’s the glue? I suspect what brings our disparate lives together is the nature of the work: it’s physical, it’s concrete, it’s meaningful. The very act of building real-world things together—hatcheries, farms, processing lines—forge common bonds. Toiling side-by-side, stories begin to flow about our struggles and triumphs. Perspectives warp, and without realizing it, against all odds, we cement in common cause. From this scaffolding, we build solidarity. I got goosebumps this year when I heard that experienced farmers volunteered to direct their $25,000 Kelp Climate Fund subsidies to beginning farmers. And again when news broke that a popular seaweed brand transferred all their assets to a farmer cooperative. Build strong bonds and crazy things will happen. I don’t know where the story of regenerative ocean farming will lead, but I do know its wellspring: Soul-filling, collaborative work with those we respect and trust. Cast your lot with us, and we’ll build a new politics out at sea. – bren Visit greenwave.org/donate to support ocean farmers
