This park is home to many capybaras, offering a glimpse into their peaceful coexistence with nature and the local community. 😁 Fun Facts About Capybaras: Size: They can weigh up to 66 kg (145 lbs) and grow as long as 1.3 meters (4.3 ft). Habitat: Capybaras thrive in wetlands and tropical environments, always close to water. Social Butterflies: Living in groups of 10–20, they form close-knit communities. Nature’s Allies: Birds often perch on their backs, showing their peaceful relationships with other species. Capybaras are more than adorable animals; they’re a symbol of harmony and adaptability in nature. Last week, REN & RGI co-hosted a workshop with 40 participants from 12 countries in Porto, Portugal, uniting experts to explore approaches to Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) 🌳 The event combined discussions on practical applications with field visits to active projects that enhance species protection 🐝, mitigate fire risks 🔥 & create benefits for local people. Day 1 featured an excursion to two remarkable sites: one showcasing how REN is supporting endangered Garrano horses by harnessing their appetite for vegetation around power lines 🐴 and the other focused on revitalising the heritage Ermelo orange with local communities 🍊. These projects #IntegrateNature by reducing forest fire risks, supporting biodiversity, and fostering long-term regional benefits through collaborations with NGOs and local municipalities. Day 2 gave participants from 21 organisations the chance to share their own work, hear about innovation in biodiversity monitoring, fire prevention and bird protection, featured helped to identify priorities for the working group in the coming year.👷🧑🏾💻   A special thanks to REN for co-hosting and to all participants for sharing their practices! Last month, REN ⚡ and Renewables Grid Initiative ⚡ hosted a workshop in Porto, Portugal, bringing together 40 experts from 12 countries to discuss Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM). The event combined talks and field visits to projects focused on species protection, fire prevention, and community benefits. Day 1 included visits to projects supporting endangered Garrano horses and revitalizing the Ermelo orange, both of which demonstrate how #IntegrateNature can reduce fire risks, protect biodiversity, and benefit local communities. Day 2 featured discussions on biodiversity monitoring, fire prevention, and bird protection, and helped to identify priorities for the working group. It’s time for Territorians to have their say on the future direction of the Territory Wildlife Park and help make the popular attraction even better. Visit: https://lnkd.in/gV4Cge_e A Consultation Paper has been released which outlines the Park’s vision and values and is designed to promote new ideas towards creating future opportunities for the Park. The consultation paper invites locals, stakeholders and park users for their thoughts on a range of themes including enhancing visitor enjoyment and community engagement, expanding conservation, education and research efforts, and growing and strengthening business opportunities. The insights and ideas provided in response to the Consultation Paper will help draft a Strategic Plan that aligns with people’s expectations, while ensuring the ongoing sustainability of the Territory Wildlife Park.  The Consultation Paper is open until Tuesday 30 April 2024, and a draft Strategic Plan will be released following the results. There will be an opportunity to comment again on the draft Strategic Plan later in 2024. Once finalised, the Strategic Plan will provide a clear vision for the future direction of the Park over the next five years. It will map out ways to attract tourism, enhance visitor enjoyment, contribute to conservation and education, promote the health and wellbeing of Territorians, and develop strategic partnerships to ensure relevance and viability of the Park on the Territory, national, and international stage.

𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐭𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 On the island of Ons, a group of 300 young people have participated in a series of activities organised under the framework of the Atlic project. This project, in collaboration with Vida Lactea, has as its main objective the awareness of the importance of the oceans and the promotion of the blue economy. The activities are designed to educate participants about marine conservation and encourage sustainable practices that benefit both the local community and the environment. On the one hand, they have learned about the results of abusive fishing in the oceans through a game designed by L'Ecole de Design Nantes Atlantique and on the other hand, they have carried out work collecting and characterising marine litter. The activity takes place in the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, a place of great natural beauty and biodiversity. The young people, guided by BlueLabs, participate in interactive workshops, educational excursions and beach cleaning projects. The Directorate General of Youth of the Xunta de Galicia supports this initiative, recognizing the importance of involving the new generations in environmental protection. These types of projects not only strengthen the sense of community and responsibility among young people, but also contribute to the creation of a sustainable blue economy, which seeks a balance between economic development and ocean preservation. Today is Natura 2000 day! 🌟🌳 💚 Natura 2000 is the the largest network of protected areas in the world: it was created 32 years ago today and over 27 000 nature sites are protected through this network by EU legislation, like the Birds and Habitats Directives. The sites cover almost one-fifth of land and one-tenth of surrounding seas, including several strictly protected nature reserves, and habitat types such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, and coastal and marine habitats. Three projects from BirdLife Partners are currently running as finalists for the European Natura 2000 Award! 🐺 Natuurpunt, BirdLife Flanders, formed the Wolf Fencing Team Belgium (WFTB) to aid over 1,080 livestock owners. This success inspired similar efforts in neighboring regions, fostering harmony between humans and wolves. 🌊 DOPPS - Birdlife Slovenia is restoring the River Stržen after it was altered for agricultural purposes in the 20th century, rerouting a 2.1 km stretch of the river back to its natural meandering flow. 🦉 Through their Nature Guardian project, SEO/BirdLife and SPEA - Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves have trained over 1,500 law enforcement agents and created tools to catch and report environmental crimes in Spain and Portugal, reducing wildlife deaths by 62% in Spain and increasing the detection of environmental crimes by over 100% in Spain and over 80 % increase in Portugal. 🏆 Tune in next week on the 29th of May to find out the winners here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxbz-BeK #Natura2000 #RestoreNature #ConservationSuccess 📸 Bittern in flight over Ključi (Photo by: Jože Papež). 🌿 Summer Wrap-Up! 🌿 As we reflect on our recent work, we’re excited to highlight the incredible work our team accomplished in the field this summer. Stewardship Spotlight: This summer, Rene Wendell, land steward in Western Massachusetts, focused on vegetation control at the lands we take care of, including the removal of invasive species like stilt grass and the newly detected Japanese primrose that is cropping up in wetland habitats. 🌱 These efforts are crucial for maintaining and increasing biodiversity, as wetlands support numerous rare species that thrive in open habitats with limited woody plants. 🍂 Read more about the importance of biodiversity: https://nature.ly/3CGMJZ2

We are pleased to announce that Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe has joined NoMaRe - Norwegian Marine Restoration as a founding member to help facilitate large-scale marine restoration in Norway 🌊   What is NoMaRe? NoMaRe is a collaborative platform aimed at facilitating the development and scaling of marine restoration solutions in Norway. The platform aims to achieve this through advocacy efforts, industry collaboration and implementing practical restoration trials. Initially, the platform will focus on restoring kelp forests (as photographed below by Jonas Legernes) across 5,000 km² of Northern Norway by removing excess sea urchins.    Why do kelp forests need to be restored?  They are a critical ecosystem which support marine biodiversity and can sequester large amounts of carbon. 60% of global kelp forests have disappeared in recent decades due to human activities and as a result of being overgrazed by excess sea urchins, after their natural predators diminished significantly.    What is Purina’s role? We’re excited to be one of the founding members, alongside Bellona, Urchinomics, Tarevoktere and IFF to help build the knowledge and engagement required to achieve large-scale marine restoration in Norway. Our team came together to spark some really meaningful conversations, especially about the huge interest in bluetech solutions that can help boost ocean resilience and aquaculture development.
