𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨 𝐯𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐬 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 According to a report published by The World Bank, cities account for over 70% of global CO₂ emissions, and urban transport plays a critical role in this. Expanding public transit, such as the Mumbai Metro, presents a significant opportunity to reduce emissions while enhancing mobility. Studies suggest that shifting even a small percentage of commuters from cars to metro trains can drastically cut fuel consumption and pollution. Metro rail systems are up to 80% more energy-efficient per passenger-km than petrol or diesel cars, making them a crucial tool for sustainable urban development. Increased Metro usage reduces traffic congestion, decreases vehicle idling, and improves air quality. Join Amit Tandon (Founder and MD, IIAS) and Subodh Kumar Gupta MMRC (Director (Projects), Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited) to explore Mumbai’s evolving transportation landscape and the transformative impact of the Metro on city mobility. If Paris can do it? Why not another city? From red hotspot of pollution To green zone Some measures that have worked: ➡️ 1.400km of protected bike lanes ➡️ Removed 70.000 parking spaces for cars ➡️ Transformed riverbanks into pedestrian zones ➡️ Restricted SUVs with higher parking fees ➡️ Banned through traffic in city center ➡️ Prohibited older diesel vehicles Well done to Mayor Anne Hidalgo for leading this transformation ♻️ reshare for more impact Giulia PS: Thanks Harald for bringing this to my attention PSS: What city should be next?

The real estate industry stands at a crossroads—where climate action is no longer optional but imperative. As cities, investors, and tenants demand sustainable solutions, the push for net zero carbon operations is accelerating. At Urban Land Institute (ULI), we recognize both the responsibility and opportunity real estate has in addressing the climate crisis. That’s why we’ve made it a global mission priority to decarbonize the sector and drive market transformation toward a net zero built environment. Companies that commit to decarbonization will not only reduce climate risks but also enhance asset value and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
