𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨 𝐯𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐬 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 According to a report published by The World Bank, cities account for over 70% of global CO₂ emissions, and urban transport plays a critical role in this. Expanding public transit, such as the Mumbai Metro, presents a significant opportunity to reduce emissions while enhancing mobility. Studies suggest that shifting even a small percentage of commuters from cars to metro trains can drastically cut fuel consumption and pollution. Metro rail systems are up to 80% more energy-efficient per passenger-km than petrol or diesel cars, making them a crucial tool for sustainable urban development. Increased Metro usage reduces traffic congestion, decreases vehicle idling, and improves air quality. Join Amit Tandon (Founder and MD, IIAS) and Subodh Kumar Gupta MMRC (Director (Projects), Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited) to explore Mumbai’s evolving transportation landscape and the transformative impact of the Metro on city mobility.
