⚛️🥐 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 | 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 Guest lecture: Satellite-based “Quantum Key Distribution” by Dr. Domenico Paone, System Engineer and Technical Responsible for Quantum Technologies, TESAT Spacecom GmbH & Co. KG 🗝️ Quantum Key Distribution (#QKD) is a secure communication method that establishes a cryptographic protocol based on the exchange of quantum mechanical quantities. Terrestrial QKD approaches have already been used to successfully demonstrate protocols for exchanging #quantumkeys. However, these approaches are typically based on optical fiber technologies, which have a significant distance limit due to losses and attenuations within the fibers. The problem makes earth-based QKD approaches impractical for global distribution networks. However, the communication range can be extended by using satellites that utilize high quality optical links. Christopher Schmidt explores the design and deployment of #OpticalCommunication terminals on small satellites (CubeSats). His work aims to enable higher data rates for mission-critical applications, supporting high-demand missions such as Earth observation. What makes this achievement truly remarkable? Vera is responsible for Laser Communication Terminals at TESAT and has been a vital part of our team for nearly four years. ✈️ Her journey began right after university, fuelled by a fascination with flight and space that was ignited by a presentation on the SOFIA research aircraft. The Laser Communication Terminals she works on are remarkable, pointing lasers between satellites across vast distances to maintain communication while satellites are in motion. The future of navigation technology is bright, and it’s being shaped by innovation right here in #Europe! 🌍✨ A consortium of over 30 companies, led by OHB SE as main contractor, TESAT as the technology leader for laser communication, the DLR Institut für Kommunikation und Navigation (German Aerospace Center Institute of Communication and Navigation), and the operator of the current European Navigation Satellite System #Galileo, spaceopal GmbH, is embarking on an exciting journey to develop optical technology for navigation. This initiative focuses on optical links for time synchronization and ranging — an area ripe for development that could revolutionize how we navigate in space. 🚀 The shift from traditional electronic systems to cutting-edge optical technology represents a significant leap forward.
