Our last session this morning tackled the timely topic of Risk Management for battery energy storage systems (#BESS). The key takeaway from our panelists was the incredible progress being made in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating the risks of grid-scale BESS installations to ensure the critical contributions of these #EnergyStorage assets are available to our system operators and developers to provide reliable, flexible, affordable, and sustainable electricity for Canadians. Our second session today at Smart Energy | Halifax took a step down from the grid-scale #EnergyStorage assets to the Potential of Customer-sited Storage Assets. The key takeaway from our stellar panelists was the importance of government, regulators, and utilities across #Canada to evaluate the potential contributions that Customer-sited (or behind-the-metre #BTM) resources can provide the grid and to correspondingly develop new price signals & frameworks to enable those contributions. Energy Storage Canada welcomes yesterday's speech from the throne, which affirms the Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario continued commitment to #EnergyStorage as a critical component of the province's future grid. The Ontario government continues to demonstrate its energy storage leadership in Canada through its competitive procurements hosted by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) securing nearly 3000MW of new energy storage capacity, making it the largest storage procurement in Canadian history to date, with additional procurements in the work, including one of the first long duration storage procurements in the world. Additionally, we support the Government's commitment to realizing the potential of Ontario's critical battery minerals to support the growing storage industry, in coordination with our indigenous partners. We stand with our members, ready to work with Doug Ford & Stephen Lecce to deliver the commitments made today and solidify Ontario's role as an energy leader

Yesterday, the Government of Alberta and the Honorable Minister Nathan Neudorf introduced Bill 52: Energy and Utilities Statutes Amendment Act, 2025. In part, it begins the legislative changes necessary to implement the Restructured Energy Market (REM), which is in the process of being designed by the AESO. The REM will place a higher value on firm and flexible supply, like that offered by #energystorage resources, with a wider price range and a modern suite of ancillary services including ramping and uncertainty reserves. ESC will continue to push for an evolution of the Alberta electricity market that reduces barriers to energy storage deployment, and the REM is a step in the right direction. A recent report commissioned by our colleagues at American Clean Power Association (ACP) performed a third-party review by the Fire & Risk Alliance, LLC of 35 large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) fires in the US since 2012 and found none resulted in contaminant concentrations that would prompt a public health concern or require further remediation. "Historically speaking, there have been very few fires at grid-scale energy storage facilities," Noah Roberts, VP of Energy Storage for ACP. The report includes an assessment of incidents by the Fire and Risk Alliance, an engineering and consulting company, that looked into 35 fire incidents at U.S. battery systems between 2012 and 2024. "Given the scale of the hundreds of energy storage facilities that are deployed across the country, that is a very rare occurrence."
