📢 Today in the #LAMASUS_early_career_researchers campaign: Researcher at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Claudia Magnapera's research interest lies at the intersection between #agricultural and #environmental economics, focusing on #policy-driven strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, with an emphasis on farmers' adoption of climate-friendly innovations and behavioral economic approaches. 💡 In LAMASUS, Claudia designs and implements an experimental approach to elicit arable farmers' preferences for carbon sequestration practices, assess the effectiveness of policy incentives, and estimate the carbon price required to encourage adoption. Together with the team at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Claudia contributes to work-package 2 on High resolution land use management geodatabase 👉 https://lnkd.in/d_E2cSPZ Thrilled to have Claudia onboard the LAMASUS team 🙌 European Commission International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Wageningen University & Research INRAE Thünen Institute WIFO University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) The University of Bonn Ruralis - Institute for Rural and Regional Research ARTTIC Innovation #ClimatePolicies, #landuse, #landmanagement, #agriculture, #organicfarming, #climatechange, #biodiversity, #BrightSpace #environment #research

The Land Management for Sustainability (LAMASUS) Project will provide tools and design processes allowing EU policymakers to assess the impacts of future land-use policies ahead of their implementation, and so make informed choices for European agriculture and land use, as well as the global climate. As part of the European Green Deal, and in line with European Climate Law, the EU has set itself a binding target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The land use sector can play a key role in achieving these goals as it has more potential for carbon sequestration than any other sector – it is in fact already removing 7% of all EU emissions. Using land to capture carbon is not an easy option – land as a resource is subject to heavy competition to provide food security, preserve biodiversity, and accommodate living space as well as infrastructure. EU policies that prioritize one use over others need to be carefully designed in an integrated approach accounting for diverse societal demands and the synergies and trade-offs among them. To ensure that the project meets the EU’s policy needs, representatives from five different departments of the European Commission, as well as noted experts in land use and agricultural policy have been invited to join the meeting and oversee the project’s progress in the form of a Policy Advisory Board. “LAMASUS will create a new level of societal engagement in which local actors contribute to the design of effective and efficient EU policies for climate neutrality and serve as an exemplar for other policy processes within the European Green Deal,” concludes LAMASUS principal investigator and IIASA Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group Leader, Petr Havlík.

📢 Live updates of LAMASUS from #Bordeaux at the 99th Agricultural Economics Society Conference. 👉 Berk Öktem from INRAE and Université Paris-Saclay chaired the session dedicated to Climate Impact, and contributed to the same session with a talk on "Drought and Agricultural Land Concentration in France". 👉 New EU maps reveal how intensively different crops are farmed across Europe Detailed, novel maps show what crops are grown where in the EU—and how intensively they’re farmed- Presented by Michael Wögerer from International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) at the Agricultural Economics Society (AES) conference, the new dataset offers a clearer picture of European agriculture and its environmental impacts. Covering the entire EU at 1km2 resolution, it has been carefully aligned with official Eurostat figures to ensure accuracy. The result is a powerful tool for researchers, policymakers, and others working toward more sustainable land use and food systems. Stay tuned for more! 📢 Launch of a new citizen science picture pile campaign on livestock and grassland management 🌽 🐮 Do you want to contribute to the European Union’s climate neutrality target? 🖼️ Join the latest Picture Pile campaign as part of LAMASUS and help us identify livestock and grassland management practices from photographs, which will be used to validate a new geodatabase on land use management. The database contains thousands of images of European landscapes that require classification by citizen scientists and volunteers. 👉 Your contributions will play a key role in helping us validate the geodatabase and provide valuable insights into how grasslands are being utilized across Europe. 💡 Interested in participating? Visit the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) website to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dtKrkhrz And follow IIASA Geo-Wiki to receive updates and news! 🌍 New Picture Pile Campaign Launched – Get Involved! We are pleased to announce the launch of a new Picture Pile citizen science campaign as part of IIASA’s LAMASUS project. Your contribution will support the validation of a new #Landuse Management Geodatabase, helping to improve our understanding of #livestock and grassland management practices across Europe. 📅 When: Now until summer 2025 📍 Where: Via your browser or the Picture Pile mobile app Why is it important? Since 2022, the Horizon Europe-funded LAMASUS project has brought together 17 partners across 8 countries to develop sustainable land use governance model. One key output is a high-resolution geodatabase for assessing the environmental and socio-economic impacts of EU land use policies. To ensure its accuracy, we need your help in validating this database. How to contribute? ✅ Access Picture Pile via your browser or mobile app ✅ Select the Livestock or Grassland Management pile ✅ Classify images by livestock type or visible signs of mowing and grazing Learn more and join us: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dtKrkhrz LAMASUS International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Linda See European Commission #CitizenScience #crowdsourcing #EarthObservation #ClimateAction #PicturePile #Sustainability #LandUse #Landmanagement #GrasslandManagement #Biodiversity

💡 New LAMASUS public deliverable 🌿 We explored how two leading biodiversity models — IIASA-PREDICTS and GLOBIO — estimate the impacts of #landuse and land management (LUM) across Europe. Both approaches reveal a shared conclusion: LUM significantly affects biodiversity, and smarter land-use planning is essential for recovery. 🔍 Key Findings: - Species richness and community similarity are consistently lower in croplands than in primary habitats. - Differences in abundance impacts suggest complementary insights between models. - Both models show similar spatial patterns of biodiversity intactness (2000–2018), with low change over time due to static land-use distribution. - Benelux shows lower intactness, while Scandinavia fares better. 🚨 Policy Implications: - Biodiversity gains require both habitat restoration and de-intensification of agriculture. - EU-wide conservation planning is more efficient than fragmented national efforts. - Future scenarios combining biodiversity, carbon, and economic cost analyses (LAMASUS WP5 & WP6) will support balanced, science-driven policy.
