Henry Brothers had the opportunity to deliver a sustainability presentation to Northern Regional College (NRC) construction students and local school pupils at the NRC Farm Lodge Campus in Ballymena. Working with Future Island-Island, our Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) team is helping to pioneer waste valorisation, exploring innovations for plastic waste collected through a new Beach Clean 2.0 method. This project recycles plastic waste, transforming the waste into objects of need and value for communities. This collaboration is shifting the focus from waste disposal to sustainable material development and manufacturing, creating a circular system for plastics. Dr. Susann Power and Dr. Bronagh Millar recently shared the journey of Beach Clean 2.0 at an event on Rathlin Island - discussing design and scaling efforts, and exploring ocean plastics’ potential through waste characterisation at the point of collection, circular supply chains, and recycled design. We’ve had another busy day in London, engaging in important conversations about the future of higher education and our role in driving innovation and economic growth across Northern Ireland and beyond. We spoke about the challenges facing universities across the UK, especially the unique pressures here in Northern Ireland. A sustainable funding model is key to making sure universities can keep delivering world-class research, supporting economic growth, and creating opportunities for more people to access higher education. We believe that collaboration between government and universities is key to making this happen. We also explored how we are helping to shape policy through our newly established Centre for Public Policy and Administration, strengthening links between academia and government to develop solutions to the issues that matter most to people in our society. Alongside this, we highlighted the huge potential of our three Belfast Region City Deal at Queen's University Belfast Innovation Centres which are set to make major strides in cyber security, advanced manufacturing, and health - sectors that are vital to Northern Ireland’s future. The trip was also a useful opportunity to shine a spotlight on the amazing work our team is doing in entrepreneurship, spinouts and community engagement, and to reinforce our commitment to making a real difference in the community we serve.
