🌍 This #EarthDay, the world is rallying behind a big goal: tripling clean energy by 2030. This target is critical to the broader effort to mitigate climate change—and highlights the need for reliable information and coordinated action across systems. While Land & Carbon Lab doesn’t work directly on energy, our efforts complement this global push by focusing on another key piece of the climate equation. Expanding clean energy must go hand in hand with efforts to monitor and manage land-based emissions and removals—vital for understanding whether we’re making real progress toward our climate goals. At Land & Carbon Lab, we’re working to make these changes more visible and accessible through open data—so decision-makers can take more informed and effective action across landscapes, sectors and scales. 🔗 See how we’re making land-based emissions and removals more visible and accessible: https://lnkd.in/dhtfDeDi #EarthDay2025 #OurPowerOurPlanet #ClimateAction

Land & Carbon Lab is convened by World Resources Institute and the Bezos Earth Fund.
About us
Land & Carbon Lab was founded by World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Bezos Earth Fund to develop breakthroughs in geospatial monitoring of the world’s land and nature-based carbon. By synthesizing troves of satellite data, we provide decision makers with actionable information and insights to restore degraded landscapes, protect forests and nature, and produce land-intensive commodities more sustainably. And we don’t just create data — we’re partnering with diverse organizations to create real world impact, from corporate leaders and policymakers to Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

We appreciated the opportunity to connect with cocoa supply chain actors at the recent World Cocoa Foundation Partnership Meeting (#WCFPM2025)! At our booth, we showcased innovative, open-source tools that support companies in measuring, managing and disclosing land-use change impacts across their supply chains. Visitors also got a sneak preview of Land & Carbon Lab’s newly operationalized land-use change emissions metrics and methodology—aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and set to be released soon. We also demonstrated the Forest Data Partnership’s unique approach to land use mapping, which prioritizes collaboration and the convergence of multiple sources of evidence. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting actionable insights across the sector! ❌Nature crime undermines global efforts to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss. 🪵Yet these crimes – which include illegal forms of logging, mining, fishing, land grabbing and wildlife trafficking – also rob countries and communities of resources and revenue and threaten human rights, sustainable development, and national security. 👉WRI's newest report published in support of Nature Crime Alliance offers a comprehensive overview of how they work and what can be done. 💬 Last week, the first-ever Nature Tech Week brought together business leaders, environmental experts, and technologists at the Nature Tech Summit, co-hosted by Nature4Climate, Nature Tech Collective and CE Events & Media . The event underscored the transformative potential of technology in tackling our planet’s most pressing environmental challenges. Here are five powerful quotes we heard there: "The sum of all recycled products is not a circular economy. The sum of all electric drives is not a new mobility system. The sum of all organic farms is still not nature restored. Nature must be reinterpreted as critical infrastructure that deserves to be investable." — Prof. Dr. Martin R. Stuchtey, The Landbanking Group "We are laying down the foundations for a post-crisis economy where nature is collateral—like preparing for a Minsky moment in ecological terms." — Prof. Dr. Martin R. Stuchtey "Most nature tech is stuck in measurement mode. Information is useful but not transformational unless it enacts governance, incentives, and policy." — Craig Mills, Land & Carbon Lab, World Resources Institute "Forests planted in 2028 might not yield credits until 2033. Those who invest now will win. Those who wait will be too late." — Kristjan Lepik, Arbonics "Sustainability is moving out of corporate affairs and marketing and into the CFO’s office. The language that resonates now is financial risk." — Sebastian Leape, Natcap 🔗 Read more about this topic in our new article: https://lnkd.in/evSwFfdb #NatureTech #Innovation #ClimateAction #InvestWithNature #WithNature #NatureFinance

Most countries report land sector emissions through national greenhouse gas inventories (NGHGIs), which only track human-caused fluxes based on each country's definition of “managed land.” But those definitions—and the data behind them—can vary widely. To strengthen transparency and improve comparability, Land & Carbon Lab and the European Commission Joint Research Centre translated Global Forest Watch’s carbon flux model into NGHGI reporting categories—providing a global, spatially explicit, satellite-based view of forest emissions and removals. The result? Aggregated GFW estimates align closely with NGHGIs: 📉 ~4 Gt CO₂/year in deforestation emissions 🌲 ~6–7 Gt CO₂/year in net forest removals …especially from 2010 onward. This agreement—despite different data sources and methods—builds confidence in both approaches and in the magnitude of the anthropogenic land sink, which is dominated by forests. And with NGHGIs serving as a key input to assessments under the Paris Agreement, this alignment is encouraging for their bottom-line message around emissions, removals and the net land sink. ➡️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/djNx5iP8 #CarbonAccounting #ForestMonitoring #ClimateTransparency
