  • Solar Orbiter is the first to capture on camera how particles are whirled from the Sun’s surface, caught in ‘cyclones’ that extend millions of kilometres from the Sun. The spacecraft is on a mission to uncover how the Sun sends out the never-ending stream of particles called the solar wind. More than just a space phenomenon, solar wind can disrupt our telecommunication and navigation systems. Find out more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dZ-QGy-m

  • 📢 Don't miss our latest mission opportunities! The scientific community in ESA's Member States can submit proposals for: ➡️ a Fast mission to be launched around 2034 ➡️ a Medium-size mission to be launched around 2041 ➡️ mini-Fast mission concepts Details about the F- and M-missions can be found here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTybrXF2 Details about the mini-F proposals can be found here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eW4H7b_A The calls are part of the long-term plan for ESA's Science Programme, Voyage 2050.

It's one of those Mondays where Webb just stops you in your tracks. The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope captured a beautiful juxtaposition of the nearby protostellar outflow known as Herbig-Haro 49/50 with a perfectly positioned, more distant spiral galaxy. • 📢 Several mission opportunities announced! The ESA Director of Science, Professor Carole Mundell, solicits the scientific community in ESA's Member States for proposals for: ➡️ a Fast mission to be launched around 2034 ➡️ a Medium-size mission to be launched around 2041 ➡️ mini-Fast mission concepts Details about the F- and M-missions can be found here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTybrXF2 Details about the mini-F proposals can be found here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eW4H7b_A The calls are part of the long-term plan for ESA's Science Programme, Voyage 2050. “A cornerstone of Europe’s scientific and technological framework, ESA's Science Programme has enabled the study, development, launch, and operation of groundbreaking missions over the past 50 years,” declared Prof. Mundell. “With pioneering advancements across multiple fields and iconic missions currently under development, the Science Programme continues to drive excellence in space science and technology. We are looking forward to receiving these new proposals to continue advancing European leadership in space.”

  • 📣 The Euclid mission releases its first batch of survey data, including a preview of its very own deep fields! With just one scan, #Euclid has already spotted 26 million galaxies! The three mosaics released today cover 63 square degrees of the sky, the equivalent area of more than 300 times the full Moon. When the mission is complete, Euclid’s grand cosmic atlas will cover 14 000 square degrees. The data release also includes the first classification survey of more than 380 000 galaxies and 500 gravitational lens candidates compiled through combined #AI & #CitizenScience efforts. “With the release of the first data from Euclid’s survey, we are unlocking a treasure trove of information for scientists to dive into and tackle some of the most intriguing questions in modern science. With this, ESA is delivering on its commitment to enable scientific progress for generations to come," declared ESA’s Director of Science, Professor Carole Mundell. Today, I presented to ESA Member States the first data from the European Space Agency - ESA's Euclid mission. This dataset includes 26 million galaxies, including a catalogue of more than 380 000 galaxies of which Euclid measured the shapes and the first catalogue of 500 galaxy-galaxy strong lenses, created using AI algorithms trained thanks to the collective effort of almost 10 000 human volunteers. Euclid scouted out three big areas in the sky, the Euclid Deep Fields, amounting to 63 square degrees of the sky, the equivalent area of more than 300 times the full Moon. In just one week of observations, with one scan of each region so far, Euclid already spotted 26 million galaxies. The farthest of those are up to 10.5 billion light-years away. In these regions, we start to hint at the large-scale organisation of these galaxies in the cosmic web. Zooming in some areas of this Euclid Deep Fields we encounter huge galaxy clusters with a sea of galaxies of many different shapes and sizes, oriented in all directions and many with spiral arms visible. In some of them, we “see” how the Dark Matter within the clusters distorts the light of faraway galaxies, forming arc-like smears. Euclid: a truly European mission, built and operated by ESA, with many contributions from its Member States and international partners. The Euclid Consortium consists of more than 2000 scientists from 300 institutes in 15 European countries, the USA, Canada and Japan. Good and just science is done alongside international cooperation, and this must stay at the core of our space activities. And as Head of Council Renato Krpoun said today after seeing the images, "well I guess this really puts things into perspective".
