ESA - Responsibility and Sustainability

Last week, the European Space Agency - ESA joined key stakeholders from across the European space sector (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), EC, ESPI, the World Economic Forum, ITU, and many more) for a focused workshop on #SpaceSustainability. The event, co-organised by EPFL, the Secure World Foundation, and their partners, offered a highly engaging and hands-on format. It allowed us to collaboratively explore gaps, synergies, and opportunities across existing initiatives at the international, regional, and inter-stakeholder levels. A big thank you to the organisers for designing such a practical, solution-oriented workshop. We look forward to building on this momentum at the upcoming #SummitForSpaceSustainability in Paris in October, where these insights will feed into ongoing discussions and actions. It's #1stApril but this is no joke. A catastrophic chain reaction of #SpaceDebris causing collisions, each creating more debris, is not just a possibility, it's already under way. Within certain heavily populated altitude bands the density of active objects is now the same order of magnitude as space debris. Is it a crisis?

We are excited to announce the opening of the 2025 European Space for Sustainability Award!  For the past 12 years ESA and the European Interparliamentary Space Conference (EISC) have given the Space for Sustainability Award to the most innovative ideas for sustainability in the space industry. European Space Agency - ESA is a pioneer in the development of #EcoDesign approaches for the #spaceindustry. #LifeCycleAssessment is the cornerstone of this approach. Essential to avoid green washing and burden shifting from a subsystem to another, a life cycle phase to another, or a service to another. The ESA LCA database, the first of its kind, is a unique tool for academia, industry, operators to analyse space projects impacts on #environment and promote #sustainability.
