🌏 Global South Paper of the Month! "Filipino migrant workers’ leisure and subjective quality of life in Macao" by Jaeyeon Choe O' Regan, PhD, Michael J. O' Regan, PhD & Albert Kimbu. Available in free access in World Leisure Journal, the official #journal of World Leisure Organization: https://lnkd.in/ggFCGVGP ABSTRACT Utilizing 14 semi-structured interviews in a non-western context, this exploratory study examines how Filipino migrant workers’ leisure satisfaction and QoL are intertwined in Macao, China. The study reveals that Filipino migrant workers regard “family and friends”, and a sense of community as central to their QoL. Regarding leisure, the Filipino migrant workers experienced a lack of time-off and long working hours (structural leisure constraints) whilst living without their families in the Philippines (interpersonal leisure constraints). In addition, the Filipino migrant workers noted that few leisure options were available to them, and given commercial options dominate in Macao, the perceived cost of leisure participation clashes with the Filipino migrant workers responsibility to send remittances home. It is recommended that authorities and employers explore the importance of subjective QoL indicators such as sense of community that emerge from marginalized social groups, such as migrant workers, into their measurement systems and policy deliberations, to create a livable and sustainable community for all. Our study enriches the extant research by broadening the research location to focus on “voices” from low income migrants in a non-western context. #research #leisure #leisurestudies #community #filipino #migrant #migration #macao #china

Happy Labour Day everyone! According to the International Labor Organisation, migrant workers have a right to receive assistance in their mother tongue or at the very least, a language they understand. The Migrant Workers Recommendation (1975) requires countries to “inform migrant workers of their rights in a language with which they are familiar, advance workers’ knowledge of the language of the country… while encouraging the preservation of the migrant workers’ national and ethnic identity and cultural ties with their country of origin.” In an increasingly digital world, it’s important that we champion digital language diversity so that millions of migrant workers worldwide can have a clear understanding of their rights and the ability to remain close to their original cultures. I'm glad that later this year our first joint (with Helena Patzer) ethnographic article showing the perceptions of Filipino migrant workers' life and work in Poland has already been published. 😊 The migration of Filipinos to Poland is arranged mainly through recruitment agencies and is mainly undertaken for contract work. This is a result of Poland emerging as an attractive migration destination country in the recent years, and of the participation of Poland in the global job placement market. The aim of this article is to discuss the way Filipino migrants envision work abroad, and how this imaginary matches the reality of working in Poland. Analyzing migrant narratives and practices, we will show how Filipino workers fare in migration. We claim that the case of the Philippines is an especially tell ing example when it comes to the positive vision of working abroad. These imaginaries are shaped by the stories told by other migrants, an intergenerational pattern of migrating overseas, media coverage, as well as the narratives of recruitment agencies. The positive imaginary of working in Poland is also a result of earlier migration experiences. Even if working abroad requires the lowering of one’s social position, it is still seen as meaningful, because it is supposed to bring a “better life” in the future. The article is a result of long-term research done by both authors over the last years. Supporting data was gathered during a joint fieldwork trip in February 2024.

AIMA staff reinforced. The Government will strengthen the Integration, Migration and Asylum Agency (AIMA) with an additional 64 workers. Three bidding processes have been published in the Official Gazette of the Union to fill 64 vacancies in various categories. The larger competition aims to recruit 50 workers for AIMA stores. Most of them with two employees – in Albufeira, Faro, Portimão, Beja, Portalegre, Évora, Odemira, Bragança, Guarda, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Alverca, Cacém and Odivelas -, while those in Lisbon and Setúbal will be reinforced with four employees, Cascais with six and Porto with eight. The competition will be open for ten working days, counting from the day of advertising on the Public Employment Exchange (BEP). The workers will occupy the position of technical assistant, with an employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period. The second competition, with the same deadlines and procedures, aims to fill “ten jobs in the general category and career of technical assistant, from the AIMA personnel map”. The third intends to reinforce the National Center for Asylum and Refugees (CNAR) with four people who will enter the AIMA staff map in the general category and career of a technical assistant. The Government defined as a priority the reorganisation of AIMA's powers and the reinforcement of resources so that the agency functions “fully, equipped with the necessary resources to ensure a quick and effective response in matters of documentation, reception and integration of immigrants in the country”, reads the State Budget for 2025. For next year, 19 million euros are allocated to AIMA. #RelocationPortugal #MoveToPortugal #ExpatsInLisbon #DigitalNomadsPortugal #LivingInPortugal #VisaSupportPortugal #HomeFindingLisbon #Umzugnach #visas

What are the most attractive countries for graduates these days? As populations age, there is growing competition worldwide for skilled young migrants, and countries are working hard to attract them. The Economist created a ranking of 74 countries and territories to assess how appealing they are to these mobile workers. It is called 'the footloose index’ 😊 Interesting findings in the link below that show Southern Europe has become increasingly appealing for mobile talent! Any guesses on the #1 country? #mobilework #remotework #hybridwork #workplaceofthefuture

📢 A review of regional migration settings has commenced with the release of the Australian Government's discussion paper, Supporting strong and sustainable regions - Review of Regional Migration Setting. Through the discussion paper, the Government is proposing five objectives for regional migration that support the five national objectives for migration. These are: 💠 Raising living standards through supporting the unique skills needs of the regions. 💠 Ensuring a fair go in the workplace by making sure that visa settings do not contribute to migrant worker exploitation and support the wages and conditions of regional workers. 💠 Building stronger communities by planning for regional migration and giving all communities the opportunity to benefit from migration. 💠 Strengthening Australia’s international relationships by using regional migration settings to support stronger international relationships and connect Australia’s regions with our international partners. 💠 Making the system work by providing tailored approaches to migration without being overly complex. The Department of Home Affairs welcomes submissions to the review online at https://lnkd.in/gwkRxipu Submissions close at 5pm (AEST) 26 July 2024.
